Surface Rust and Pitting on my Tail Pipes. 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I just bought my new 2008 (hold over) this past fall. I only put 54 miles on it!
I was showing it to a buddy today and noticed that the stock tail pipes have pitting all over them. At first I thought it was dirt but it appears to be pitting or rust. What the hell? The bike is spotless and has never been ridden in moisture or been washed.

Does this sound like a warranty issue?

Thanks,
Deck99

I think RS Chrome is of poor quality. I've particularly noticed the soldier joints show signs of rust

My garage is very dry. I have a lot of woodworking equipment in there with bare cast iron tops with 0 rust.

I'd say it was a warranty issue. Mine will be 13 years old in May and has never had any rust. The next thing you'll have to worry about is the battery. That is if the unit sat that long without a full charge being kept on it.

Get much rust there in the middle of Texas?

deck99,
It would seem odd to have rust so soon.

I did have some left over mufflers from the Dual setup that I left lay on the garage floor. They were rusty within the week from the vehicles bringing in the salt.

Yes, Yamaha chrome is not the best by far. I'd see if some chrome cleaner would clean them up.

No, I guess not. Also, my bike won't start when it's raining, maybe because I won't put the key in it.

I know this probably isn't related to your pipes but it might help to dertermine where the pits came from.
I have a 2001 RS, when I bought the bike, the first owner kept the bike in his attached garage which essentially meant, climate controlled. The chrome on the bike was perfect.
I bought the bike and stored the bike in my garage which is NOT connected to my house so it really isn't climate controlled. I opened the garage one morning and noticed a lot of moisture drops all over the bike but never really gave it much thought. The moisture is from condensation. Most of the "cheap" chrome on my bike is ruined with pitting now. It really doesn't matter how much wax you have on your bike. If your bike is stored in a building, shed that is not climate controlled, you will have drops of condensation on your bike. Pitting will happen... It took me a long time to realize this and know where my pitting came from.
I assume the dealership probably had the bike in storage at one time and this is when the pitting actually took place.
