Backfiring 6 Years, 2 Months ago
I have a 2004 1700 Roadstar and since it was new it has backfired when I downshift. The dealer (mechanic) assured me it was normal and part of the emissions system and he was not allowed to do the fix himself. He told me how to stop it by plugging two hoses coming from the??? I've looked the bike over and I don't have a clue where the two hoses are that need to be plugged. Can anyone enlighten me on this. I just recently modified my stock pipes(stage 1 of the method posted here) and now when it bacfires it's very loud and annoying. Thanks in advance for any help, John

PipeFitter,

There's a section on "AIS Removal for a 2004 Road Star" in the Technical Tips section of this forum. The link to it is: http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/49/105/
There are some pictures here which should get you into the ballpark.

The AIS is one of the pollution control systems that tries to feed unburned gas in the exhaust back to the intake. You can buy a kit which basically includes just some stoppers that plug up the holes on the engine from where the ais hoses are removed. I removed mine and I noticed a big improvement on deceleration.

Good luck.

Could also be an exhaust leak. That was why mine was back firing.

I just tried plugging the two hoses between the tubes and the AIS. This is what my dealer was talking about but i didn't have a clue what he meant. With the info you showed me I figured which hoses I needed to plug so I shoved a block in the hoses and reinstalled them. The backfiring is gone. Thanks

AIS does not put unburned gas back
into the intake It injects filtered air from outside into the exhaust manifold to burn unburned gases in the exhaust. A deliberate afterburning in the exhaust for the pollution concious. Hence the backfiring.
