Riding Etiquette 1 Year, 3 Months ago
|
|
|
After reading the thread "What gets up my exhaust pipe" I went looking through this website looking for an "Riding Etiquette" segment, which I could not find. As I am fairly new rider I myself will be the first to admit that I do not know much about Etiquette being that I rarely ever ride in groups larger that 4 and its usually just me and my buddies. After being a memeber for some 5 months and reading a ton of info on here it is VERY clear that most everyone on here is very helpful and are more than willing to share their knowledge and experiences. As a rider who is hungry for more knowledge will you other members help me and future riders to learn the basics of riding etiquette? Thanks!

The standard rules of the road apply...dont tailgate, use your signals, dim your hi-beam for oncoming trafic at night, etc. MSF has some great tips for group riding.
One thing that comes to mind is when faster riders come up behind me, I slide over to the berm side of my lane to give them a little extra room to get around. Then there's the whole waving thing too. I try to always wave at other riders but if I miss one I dont feel bad about it. And if I do wave and I dont get a wave back, thats OK too.
The biggie is to respect other riders and their rides. Dont brand/style bash and be patient with unexperienced riders.
And for God's sake, if you see a really cool bike in a parking lot, dont sit on it without the owners permission. Thats a good way to get your ass kicked.

Only a few things come to mind
1. If you are in front of other riders and you see something in youir lane, like roadkill or debris, point it out to those behind you.
2. Wave others around you if you have to slow down or are jacking around with your equipment.
3. Don't show up for a group ride without enough gas and make everyone wait on you.
4. Only take half a parking space.
Have fun!

Another important thing (at least in my opinion): If you see a fellow biker at the side of the road having technical difficulties, always stop and ask if they need a hand... even if you can't actually do something to help, the moral support will be enough...

Addition to pointing out road hazards - Use your left hand to point out things on the left side. Use your right foot to point at things on the right side. Don't release the throttle to point at a hazard - that makes you the hazard, especially when riding in a group.
