How do bikes react when they get a flat? 1 Year, 2 Months ago
|
|
I recently got a nail in my rear tire but did not realize it until I got home and saw it sticking out. It went in head first and lucky for me never punctured the tire.
I got to thinking that in the 12 years that I have been riding I have never had a flat so I decided to start this post to get an idea of what to expect if it ever happens

Oh, when it happens you will know... I've only had a flat on the rear. The bike gets really loose in the rear and wiggles back & forth. It is a really bad feeling. I don't run anything in my tires, but I have been thinking of using one of the balancing sealers. Kill two birds with one stone kind of thing.

BADLY!
I haven't had a flat in a whole lot of decades but I remember the one's I did have well, very well. Luckily though I have had one front go I never had a "blow out" as in instantaneous failure. first inkling is it feels a bit squirrley, at that moment don't look around or think of anything but getting slowed down. DO NOT GRAB THE BRAKES! Roll out of the throttle and head for the shoulder, now is not the time for any kind of quick movements, the tire going flat makes all movements much worse.
For me I Slime all my tires and never ever run the tires until they need replacing. I replace them long before they are out of tread and I buy high quality (expensive) tires. Truly cheap insurance when you only have two of them. I know what I'm talking about, I have owned and ridden (and am building another) chopper that had no brake up front and the skinniest tires you ever saw. You learn real quick to put the best damn one's you can find under your butt.

th,
What does "Slime all my tires" mean? Also when is the tread too low for you and which brand tires do you recommend or stay away from?

One of the balancing sealers is Ride On. It will balance the tire without use of external weights while providing sealing for most punctures. These products only work well with tubeless tires, but looking at your sig pic, you have cast wheels so you are OK.
Slime is another sealer you can put in your tire. I guess it would balance too. Can't tell you for sure.
Any of the major tire brands are about as good as you get. I have Michelin on the front and Avon on the back. I'd just be careful of some brand you have never heard of.

Great info! I am definitely going to get Ride On right away and I agree that when it comes to motorcycling safety you have to stay away from generic brands. Hopefully won't have to ever experience a flat but good info there as well to get an idea of how I will need to adjust...

I've had a blowout on the front going about 50mph when I hit a pothole hard enough to peel back the edge of the rim. I had a passenger but it wasn't a huge deal. Bike gets squirrely but nothing crazy, biggest thing like anything else is don't panic, get it slowed down and pulled over. I've also had 2 blowouts on the rear, one at 70mph on my roadstar with a passenger, just kept it straight and slowed down. One at over 100 mph on a racetrack, and somehow I kept it up and ended up falling over going 10mph when I hit the grass. It gets really loose as you almost come to a stop, so easy on the brakes and just try to keep it in a straight line.

I've never had a "blowout", but have had 2 front flats (nails) and 6 rears (2 screws,1 nail, a section of a cold weld, half of a bastard file, and a section of a retractable car antenna).
They have always gone down relatively slow, the fastest gave me about 4 seconds before it was totally flat. If you are not running massively loud pipes and an MP3, you can hear the tire howl on th road. The steering is very heavy, front or rear, and the bike generally feels unstable, but like it wants to go straight in the direction it is pointed. With a front, once you get down around 10 mph, the handlebars will try to occilate. fighting it is futile. Just keep the clutch in, and try to keep your hands on the bars. The flat tire will slow you to a stop.
