Recently I re-jetted my bike and got it running good, after running rich for as long as I've had it.
Originally I'd had some difficulty dialing in the carbs but found it was due to fowled plugs. A new set of plugs cured this and everything had been fine for a few days as I took some short trips around town and a few quick stints on the freeway.
Then about a day ago, I began to notice some slight hesitation under full throttle acceleration as the RPMs
climbed. I figured I was just hitting the rev
limiter and thought little of it since the bike had been running so well. All *seemed* fine until I took my first long ride today.
While coasting down a long hill at about 60 MPH, I noticed some minor popping off throttle. I thought I'd already had the PMS
dialed in but figured the popping was because I'd not ridden under those conditions. I have my PMS set up so I can reach down and dial it in as I ride, so I backed it out about a 1/3 turn. This seemed to cure the popping and I continued on.
Then several hours later, as I was cruising down another steep hill at about 75 - 80 mph the popping and cracking returned, only much worse. It seemed the more gas I gave it, the worse it got. Thinking the bike was running too lean, I reached down and turned the PMS some more, but this made only a slight difference.
It got so bad, that it felt like I was running out of gas, but since I'd filled up only 50 miles earlier, I thought that the pickup screen inside the tank may have some how got clogged, so I turned the petcock to reserve. This *seemed* to momentarily help.
Unfortunately, things began to get so bad, that even as the road leveled out, the more gas I gave it, the more it popped and crackled. It began to seem as if the problem was occurring as the RPMs climbed, so I pulled over to check things out.
The bike was idling low and rough, so I turned my PMS back in with the engine running to see how far out it was. As I dialed it back in, the bike began idling better until it was all the way it. I set it to two turns out and got back on the road.
Again, this had little effect and the more I road, the worse popping and crackling became. Everyone few seconds, it would miss a beat, stutter and cough out the intake. It improved if I backed off the throttle or down shifted to decrease the RPMs but it returned as the speed and RPMs increased.
I nursed the bike home and by the time I got back to town, the popping was occurring at just above 1/4 throttle even at lower speeds now.
Any ideas what might be causing this?
