Progressive spring and emulator for oil weight 1 Year, 1 Month ago
|
|
After much research on the internet (mostly this site), I caved in and decided to upgrade my forks.
I orderd the progressive springs and emulaters from
http://www.pacificcoaststar.com/pcs/road_star_front_end.htm
(Yes, I know it's going to ride 1/2" higher but it's better than 1/2" lower and making cornering more difficult, which is the reason why I'm upgrading and not just maintaining)
I also ordered
http://www.denniskirk.com//leak-proof/pro-moly-fork-seal-wiper-dust-cover-kit.p149892.prd/149892.sku
My next question is what weight oil should I use? Most people say 10w, as does the write up on this. Aside from predictibility in the corners, I'm looking for comfort. Would 7.5w be a good comprimise? If I went with that, should the emulator have 7 turns vs 6?
Thanks, as always,
-Rob

I just made the change to 7wt and progresive lowering spring. i can say i wish i would have gone to 10wt but only because i have a fairing i think. And as far as the 1/2 inch higher thing just cut the spacer a half inch shorter (if you have spacers in the standard springs) unless you want the nose Up some

The 10 wt and the progressive springs will make for a great ride. I was very pleased with mine, no regrets.

I went with 10w Amsoil shock therapy fork oil with the progressive 2" lowering springs. I did not install the emulators but I can tell you it handles like it is on rails. Minimal dive in the front with a great ride. It is firmer so it doesn't have the mushy feeling like the stock set up was. I would say it is in the top 5 best mods I have done.
Still putting it back together but here is a pick from yesterday.

I guess my question is how does the emulator impact the oil weight? With the emulator, wouldn't it right fairly harsh (compared to just the progressive spring) on smaller bumps?
I'm cool with it being up 1/2". Call me crazy, but I don't want PVC in my forks. It's a stupid thing, but it would always bother me.

By design it allows a small amount of fluid to go past on small bumps but the springloaded shim will get pushed back when you hit bigger bumps to soak Up the shock and thats what you do the turns in or out on. You do know your in for some Work right? You are gunna have to drill on the dampener rod.

If I were you, I would call Race Tech and tell them what your setup is, and they will gladly tell you which weight oil to go with. Heavier is not always necessarily better with emulators, and the pressure curves they have developed pair certain spring and oil weight combinations. They are great, helpful folks. Helped me when I done my SV. Also, drilling the damping rods can be a pain. Take your time and step up the drill sizes in 1/16 inch increments, or use a unibit with some type of lube. She'll get a bit hot.
