Strange electrical problem 1 Year, 1 Month ago
OK, here's what happened. Last week I started the bike to put away in the garage. I started it without the choke and it idled a little low. I drove it around back to the garage and when I got it into the garage it was idling ok. All of a sudden I heard a chattering noise coming from the area around the compression release cover. The bike died and I had no lights, it would not start, I had nothing. About a minute or so later as I was trying to figure out what was going on the lights came back on and it would restart. If it idled the chattering would return but if I revved it up a little it would go away. I took the cover off the compression release solenoid and the compression release rods. I started the bike to determine where the noise was coming from and it turned out the compression release solenoid was chattering like a woodpecker on a rotten tree. Increasing rpms would make it go away.
Today I started the bike and rode about 2 miles to the shop. I shut it off and didn't try to start it again for about an hour. I started it up and it did the same thing. I waited about 2 minutes and turned the ignition on and had lights again and it started. I let it idle and no chatter. I rode it home and let it idle and no chatter.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so what did you do to correct it. I checked the basic things and there isn't any loose connections that I know of.
Any help appreciated....

Sounds like you have a sticking solenoid. If it does it again rap the solenolid with a ball peen hammer, lightly, a few times while its idling and see if it stops chattering.

Solenoid works fine. That won't explain the loss of electrical power.
