Greater than 50 mpg - yes I'm bragging 6 Years, 1 Month ago
So I've been chasing a pipe dream. 05 midnight star (1700 - hard packs loaded - windshield - lowers - my fat butt (250 pounds)) Speedstar K&N filter / box, self ported intake, stage 1 mod on the exhaust. main jet 167.5, baron's needle, 4th slot (I think) pms about 1 3/4 out (no adjustment to the accelerator pump screw)... WOT shows it being just a wee bit lean... plugs look nice and light tan... she won't fire without the enrichener and take 2 - 3 min to warm up then 1/2 choke for about a mile.... will occasionally cough when I blip the throttle (about every 4th time - I do that a lot) runs like a raped ape (and I do run it hard)... took her out this week went 210 miles before I needed reserve... gas millage was 51.3 mpg... I'd have to say I'm happy! now am I done messing with that carb... probably not... ~Guido

Davehrn, you are what I am looking for, someone who post what mods they have done and how the bike runs. Now if I could get someone that has a 1600 with a dyno jet kit and similar mods as mine to post what settings their on and how it runs, it would give me a good place to start.I posted yesterday under jetting.

Sounds excellent!

I'm at 170 but I think I'll go back to the 167.5. It runs great but my buddy says it puffs a bit of black when I jump on the throttle.

Dave,

I get similar gas mileage -- usually better than 50 mpg. My bike is also a 2005 Road Star (Silverado). I have the V&H Powershots, baron's ported manifold, BAK, main jet 172 and clip set on 3.5 (3 with a .020 spacer holding the needle up). The PMS screw is right at 2. Also, have the Dyna 3000 ignition module. I use the choke to crank it when it's cold but don't leave it on long and it does run extremely well. I'm glad to hear someone else say they're getting better than 50 mpg. I was beginning to look for reasons why that must be wrong and thinking I must be deluding myself! I think now instead of worrying about it I'm going to start crowing about it! In fact, I guess I am right now!

I love this bike if you can't tell!

I am getting an average of 53.1 mpg with my 05 midnight star. Stage 1, stock intake manifold, stock air filter, stock carb setting, Mobil-1 15-50 synthetic, a healthy 220 lb.(ish) rider and a twichy right wrist. Saddle bags are half empty , this probably makes up for the difference in mileage. I am considering stage 3 but really like the low rumble of stage 1 with 8 holes in the baffles.

Regards
Rick

Stage One and bone stock otherwise...last tank on a weekend cruise was 52.5 mpg, one up. bags filled with rain gear and leathers...typical around town performance is 40-45 mpg...on the road nearly always 50+...high 53, low 38...05 Road Star here too

O.K., I'm reading the bragging rights and my gut is sinking deeper and deeper. Thinking about the good ol' days, when my bike was new off the floor I can remember 50 mpg, but now . I'm lucky if I get 120 miles out of a tank. So, I tried going back to 2 turns on the PMS, runs great, buit my idle does not sound as smooth. (currently running 3 1/2 turns, I feel like running with a 5 gallon jug turned upside down forever feeding my tank) and I will see how it does. I did notice however, as Dave mentioned a lot less poping on decel. Will update again IF I reach 50 mpg, if not I will waller in my own little haven and reset my odometer every other fill up and think that I'm getting 63 mpg. Happy riding-Paul

you know the funny part was at bone stock I was getting 41 mpg, if I was easy on the throttle I'd get 43. When I first rejetted I was using a 172, way to rich and was getting 43!!! stock = sucks ~Guido

Guido--

Not sure where you live...maybe the elevation has something to do with it?!?! I have been reluctant to mess with the carb setup because of the great gas mileage performance

If I remember correctly I'm right around 1100 feet above sea level. my dealer also adjusted the carb prior to my getting it (good dealer - made it run right before I took it home and had to bring it back to complain)... It was also nice to find the brass plug on the PMS was taken out in that process... but truly I was shocked to find I could open up the air cleaner, rejet to 172 and still get better gas milage (ported intake too) ~Guido
