Switch Housing Help Needed 1 Year ago
My turn signals have been "sticky". So I decided to open up the left switch housing and "clean" things up.

Carefully removed everything, cleaned, and was putting it back together. The signals work much smoother. Horn works great.

Just as I was putting the High/Low beam switch in, it literally crumbled into pieces. No big deal, I think. I just put the parts back together as it logically made sense. No headlights. Then, I find a small ball bearing on the ground. It goes somewhere. I can try a few things of where I think the part goes, but I'm wondering if I'm missing a spring too.

ANYONE know where I can find the schematic to the high/low beam switch? I tried the obvious part houses, but it's a single unit on the schematics I've found.

HELP.

Thanks,
Jim

Fixed.

Holy crap, that was like a puzzle. Two small springs, a ball bearing, and a triangular copper piece.

One spring goes under the copper triangle to keep pressure to the rocker switch and allows contact to the two set of wires for Hi/Low beams. The other spring is capped with the ball bearing and fits to the rocker switch to give positive stopping points when rocked. Then the whole thing has to fit together like a puzzle. All the while, you have to keep the wires running in specific places in order to keep them out of the way of the handle bar when mounting the housing. Finally, put two screws in place to hold it while trying to keep everything from snapping apart on you.

Not fun. Won't undo those screws again. LOL

Glad you got it. I've done it too on rocker switches. I would have tried to help you out but I couldn't figure out how to explain it.

Isn't that the truth!

If anyone needs anything taken apart and reassembled in the left switch housing, I'm your expert. Lol. If the factory were nearby I think I could qualify for a job.

That said, cleaning all the parts for my turn signal switch resulted in like new operation. My signals were always sticky and felt like I had to force them (especially the left signal). Now, smooth as silk and the return to center automatically. Didn't realize how bad they were.

Including the time to "learn", about an hours time. Well worth it.

My switch wasn't sticky, just didn't work on the right side suddenly. Right turn signals wouldn't work, switch wouldn't slide all the way to the right. Left side worked fine.

Took the clamshell apart, looked inside the switch mechanism, discovered a dead "sweat bee", a bunch of larvae, and what looked like mud dauber wasp "mud", preventing the switch from going over all the way. Have never seen this before. Cleaned it out with a small screwdriver, works beautifully again.

Just posting this in case anyone encounters something like this in the future. Took about 3 minutes to fix what I thought was a broken switch - $220 just for the replacement part.
