Thanks Fireman.

I did some quick searches this AM. Seems the topic of splicing O2 sensors is all over on car forums and the answers to the question of splicing are all over the place as well.

Here's a link I found which seemed the best answer:
http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/how-to/repair/how-to-replace-an-oxygen-sensor

The hard part to believe is the "breathing through the wire" part but hey, it is Pop Mechanics

Noting the point about an O2 sensor that comes with a plug... perhaps this describes the issue some of us are experiencing.

Found what seems to be the definitive answer on how O2 sensors work, for anybody that cares:
http://www.aa1car.com/library/o2sensor.htm

I am going to fix my issue this weekend if not sooner... Bosch Universal O2 sensors are $60 on Amazon.

Yes! Those fricken things were perplexing at first... needed my johnny qwest decoder ring to finally figure out how the locking mechanism functioned... there's not much slack in the wire either which doesn't help. I did it a few months ago and am trying to remember the trick... I believe the "lock" was on the sensor side not the bike side wire... I do remember after figuring it out it was a piece of cake but perplexed me for a while...

I'll run out and take a look at it again and see if I can jog my memory more specifcally...

OK... just ran out to the bike and remembered... The locking mechanism is on the sensor side. Its a black plastic tab that you have to press outward.... just put some pressure outward with your thumbnail while gently pulling the two halfs apart and it should pop right out...

R*Rob,

Thanks for checking on this. I was out last night, being eaten by mosquitoes, and was trying to push all those friggin tabs in, almost destroying em.

So the sensor side has a tab under the bike side plug. Your saying you don't squeeze that down, you pull it away from the plug or push it up toward the bike side plug?

Re:Sad about pipes 12 Months ago
there is a black tab maybe a 1/4" wide and maybe 1/2" long on the sensor side connector. you push that outward.... those small little black square "tabs" will then go inward on their own and the connectors can be pulled apart.. Holding it in your hand you would catch that tab with the tip of your thumb or thumb nail and push it outward...

the above is assuming you've unscrewed the one phillips screw holding the connector to the bike (for the top O2 wire anyway)
