Belt tension on 99 Road Star 7 Years, 10 Months ago

What's the best way to see if the belt is adjusted properly. I checked that so-called window on the belt guide cover, and when I pushed up on it, it moved about 1 inch. What's a good reading. Thanks.

The best way is to go to a HD shop and buy a guage. Mine cost me $25.
Set the rubber to the 10 mark, push upon the belt and see how much it deflects on the belt guide when it reaches the rubber. If not to spec, then adjust.

Thanks DocShadow. I'll keep this in mind. P.S.. At least the belt isn't making that slipping whining sounds that is unique with a loose belt, so I'm probably still good to go.

You also don't want it too tight as it will load up the bearing. It' makes a whirring sound.
If you don't want to buy the guage, a strategy you can use is to loosen both adjusting bolts about a 1/4 of a turn until it starts to chirp on decel then tighten them up 1/8 of a turn.
Obviously this takes more time.

Another way to tell is that you should be able to twist it only 1/4 of the way around, in the middle of the 'free span'.

Dude -
Trust me and listen to DocShadow on this one. Buy the gauge and adjust the belt properly, center the axle and it will never give you trouble. It's kind of a pain to get it just right but well worth the trouble.

Manual says to measure belt slack when engine is cold and drive belt dry. Make sure the bike is on a level surface, elevate the wheel until it clears the ground. Then rotate the wheel several times and check the belt to locate its tightest point. At that point is where the tension should be checked.
BTW, my belt is making a lot of noise lately, yet it seems to be properly tensioned. Wondering if it could be dirty or??

"my belt is making a lot of noise lately"
Need more info. When does it make noise? All the time ... only on decel .... only on accel ....
What does it sound like .... chirping, whirring, complaining

Yes, 'chirp' or 'whine' upon accel or decel are 4 different combinations that will mean different things. Also, a kind of whiney, singy sound upon no-load cruising may mean a misaligned belt. And a 'squeeky' belt when pushing the bike around the garage could mean dust on the belt.

I adjust mine with a light push up (about 2 marks on the belt guard).
