Need Advice 11 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I got on the bike this morning and pulled out the choke, turned on the ignition, pulled in the clutch lever, and POP! Broken clutch cable. Had to get in the car and drive 50 miles away to pick up new cable. Installed new cable and reached in my pocket to get my key and it wasn't there. Looked all over for it, in the car, in the truck, all over the house... no key. Drove to storage facility to get my spare and it wasn't where I thought it was. Are there any suggestions on how to get my bike started without the key or do I need to call out a locksmith to make a new one?

There is a code printed on the underside of your gas cap key cover. You will probably need to get a small mirror, slide the cover out, and see if you can read it. If you can get it, any Yamaha dealer should be able to make you a new key with it.

I did not know that, thanks. It's dark here now, I'll try to see that number tomorrow.

Jim Travis (used to be head mechanic at NoPork.com and worked at Malcolm Smith Motorsports before that) posted it here a while back.

I sure miss that guy

I found my spare key!!!!(it was where my wife hid it and didn't remember) Anyway, I looked under my gas cap key cover and couldn't find a key code. There were two letters and the number 2. They were stamped into the cover. I'm guessing a manufacturer's part code?

I went and looked at mine last night, and there were 4 numbers in black. Good info. One was about wiped off. I'm think'n I should probably make a note while I can.

Glad you found the spare. Hopefully the other will turn up. I misplaced my wife's car keys the other day. I was thinking about one thing and doing another, and tucked them into a spot where I put the man cave key, and promptly forgot about it. It took me two days to look there. When I did it wasn't any kind of an "Oh Yeah!" moment. More of an I wonder???

Never ever lose your wifes car keys...I'm just sayin.

I had 5 spare keys made when I bought my '00...gottem' stashed in strategic places about the house & shop. Luckily I haven't needed them, but I got them if I do.
