Mustang Seat...sadly a disappointment>>>> 6 Years, 2 Months ago
I was so anxious to get this seat...the standard seat being a bit thin (to be charitable)...it arrived today and I actually left my office a bit early to get it installed and take a ride. The install was VERY easy...the problem...if you are taller than 5'8" I simply cannot see this seat being comfortable for you...I am 6'2" and when I sat in the seat my knees covered the emblems on my 05 R*...no matter how I jostled around, I could not find a position that allowed me to fit comfortably on the bike...I read on several fora that the seat moves you "a little" forward...maybe it's just me and the way I am built but NO WAY is it just a little IMHO!

My wife, who is 5'5" sat on it and it fit her perfectly...normally, the R* is too much of a stretch for her to reach the controls comfortably.

Back to the drawing board...BTW, cruisercustomizing.com was a GREAT outfit to deal with on this...while I have to eat the return shipping, they are taking the seat back and crediting my account no problems...you can use them and buy with confidence!

Too bad it didn't work out for you.

The layout of the frame means that any seat that sits you lower will also push you forward.

The only way to move back is to thin out the rear part of the seat or modify the frame. I moved my A pillar (the parts that hold the rear fender) back; others have totally cut it off. These are obviously drastic measures.

Have you talked to Ray at Looney Seats? (http://www.looneyseats.com)

I think I am going to give the ultimate seat a try...they say same height same distance to handlebars and that's what I need...probably should have gone there first

I'm 5'10" and just upgraded to the mustang.... I did think it did move me forward quite a bit and had a few moments where I thought the same thing, not comfortable, compared to the stock, less real estate to move around with... did I make a bad choice? But I had mustang before and new it would take a little while to break the seat in. I'm a long distance rider and like to spend hours sitting on my bike so I've been toughing it out. I've got the drivers back rest and don't know if I'd ever give that thing up... I've got about 200 miles on the seat and it starting to fit my butt. monday I spent about 4 hours straight in the seat and had just a tiny bit of soreness when I got off, that to my surprize went away in a few minutes. Also I began riding on dirt bikes and like to have my feet under my body for control... here's a laugh, I thought my virago 750 had controls that were to far forward... and when I sat on the m109 from suzuki I thought "hell I can't even up shift this thing... controls way to forward" so the mustang actully makes ME feel more comfortable with my control of the bike... Oh well to each their own.. you gotta make a bike fit you, not the other way around... ~Guido

Right after I bought my 05' RS I went on E-bay looking for a drivers back rest.
I've had 3 lower back surgeries and need serious support. I ended up with the driver and passenger seat with Utopia back rest installed off an 04'. This is the seat with the brown leather trim where the studs are. Looks xlnt and is incredibly comfy and supportive. I like my feet way out in front of my knees and most of the after market seats look like they will push you forward so I tried this first. Beside I got the whole set up for $120.00 total and sold my stock set up for $145.00. Unfortunately, there isn't a way to "try out" a seat before you buy it. This is the best place to get experianced opinions on such topics. By the way, I'm 6' 220lbs.

Dave, How far forward did the mustang seat move you? I am also 5'10" and feel like if the controls on my 04 Roadstar were 2" further back, they would be perfect, but I never thought about getting a seat that sits further forward. I was going to put on some longer handlebars this year, but maybe I should upgrade my seat first.

my knees touch the back part of the emblem on the tank... and I always thought my windshield was about 1 inch to high, now it's perfect... hard to say exactly how it changed my riding postion, but it did move me forward ~guido

Ok, thanks! Looks like I need to upgrade my seat before I decide on the handlebars.

This forum is a big help! Thanks to all who contribute.

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum but noticed your post about custom seats. I'm feeling the urge to get something more comfortable and go on some long road trips this summer. I'm 5'8 so I don't think I'd have a problem with the seat moving forward for me.....I'm mainly just looking for comfort and price. I'm considering a few options but was wondering about your opinions.

I was thinking about combining the utopia backrest with a gel pad install in the stock seat from looneyseats that was mentioned earlier in this post. The price would be lower for something like that but I can see it not going as planned. I also found a good price on a used touring seat, the one corbin makes for yamaha, but I'm wondering how comfortable it would be.

Also, I noticed that thebru mentioned he sold his stock set for $145. Where did you sell it? I'm worried I wouldn't get a good price by just listing it on ebay.

Any other ideas for a nice comfortable seat without breaking the bank? Appreciate any feedback you guys have!

Post edited by: massiccio, at: 2006/04/11 11:12

mas--

The Mustang was VERY comfortable in the abstract...it just moved me WAY too far forward...it appears as thogh Guido at 5'10" was good to go so I guess the gap bewtween 5'10" and 6'2" is where the position is going to get dicey!
