It is not a good idea to "never" switch to reserve. The lower intake on the standpipe for the reserve side is where water hides. The last thing you want to do is "hit" reserve, switch to it, and your bike falls on it's face! Ask me how I know.
Routinely cycle to reserve, just to make sure you won't be screwed when you need that last gallon. do it on the way home, about 1/2 mile or so out, so it ain't no big deal to get it in the garage and drain the float bowl if it does die. If you want to be prepared for something like this on the road, carry an empty water bottle (tons of uses, a decent length, around a foot, of 3/16 hose, a long extension, 1/4 drive ratchet, and a 5MM Hex
driver, and you can reach across to the bowl drain screw from the left side of the engine.
