Platinum Boarder Posts: 4200 Fork oil drain plugs? 12 Months ago   I used to have a Honda Trail 90 that had real small drain plugs in the bottom side of the forks. It was a total piece of cake to drain, flush and refill the forks. I wonder if drain plugs could be drilled, tapped, and installed somewhere in the bottom sides of our Roadie forks. This would sure make fork oil changes easy. Has anyone dared try this? All bikes should be designed after the ol' Honda 90, IMHO. Must be invisible... They're up inside the fork past the axle shaft. It could be that I'm dreaming this too, but I swear some people talked about draining their forks through these holes. They have to be cleaned with tranny fluid (?) and pumped to clean the seals. Plus if the seals are bad you'll be able to access it better. Oil height measurements should be taken with the tube vertical. Not that it makes a huge difference, but it's more consistient. Measuring volume of oil added is probably only slightly less accurate than "eyeballing it". I like a good easy button, but I love me some well tuned forks.   Logged       The administrator has disabled public write access. #506422 sigmund (User) Senior Boarder Posts: 283 Re:Fork oil drain plugs? 12 Months ago   I'm pretty sure I read that the reason you shouldn't use the plugs at the bottom of the tubes is that they are screwed in to a tube inside the forks and that tube can come loose and rotate and then you have a mess trying to get the plug screwed back in. If the damper rod spins, you can use a broom handle to hold it tight enough to zip it back on with a pneumatic impact wrench, which is also the best way to get it out. It would be difficult, although not impossible, to get the parts out of line, but as stated before, I'll pull 'em, even on my bikes that had drain screws.   Logged       The administrator has disabled public write access.
