A friend recently bought an 08*. He called me today to ask about what kind of oil I used. He was getting ready to change his oil, and I told him that he should not put more than 4 quarts. Is this correct with the 08, just as it is with my 07?

Make sure he drains the tank and the engine. Put two quarts in the tank, crank the bike and let it idle to 5 minutes or so (don't rev it up, that causes the oil to froth). Shut it off, the dip stick will read little or no oil, add the other two quarts, being careful on the second not to overfill.
The tank is kinda pyramid shaped on the top, making it easy to over fill.
Make sure to use new washers on the drain bolts. The Yamahas are true crush washers and cannot be reused. If you substitute aluminium or copper washers you can use them a couple times before repalcing.

Thanks, I told him that and he thought I was crazy that you would start the bike with only two quarts. I also told him that he needed to make sure that the dipstick was in good and tight before starting the engine. You may be right about not revving the engine, but my manual says to rev it several times. Anyway I told him it would probably be best if he brought his bike to my house to for his first oil change.

I'm sorry... the highlighted area is WRONG. Here is the NOTE in the service manual. It is pretty much very correct:

NOTE:
• Pour the engine oil in several stages.
• First, pour in 2.5 L (2.2 Imp qt, 2.6 US qt) of oil, and then start the engine and rev it 3 to 5 times. Stop the engine, and then pour in the remainder of the specified amount.

I have a 09 rs I bought it new, when I changed my oil there were no washers under the drain bolts I checked the drain pan thinking maybe they fill in there ,but they werent any.I think the bolts are different on my model there are no leaks so I just left it that way.

Mine's never had a washer on either bolt, and has never had a leak.

Be careful though ,try and get the oil level halfway up the dip stick.too high and your valve covers will start leaking and you will get oil in your airbox.I saw this firsthand.
