I pull the cable loose at the bars, stand them up. And make a masking tape funnel at the top of the cable sleeve, and just funnel it in. Exercise the cable as you go, and it helps it work it's way down.

I use 30 weight motor oil and it works for me. Matter of fact it is time to lube again.

How much of a mess does it make as it slowly seeps out over time? I would think that the dedicated cable lubes would tend to stay in the cable housing/sleeve as where the oil would want to drain out. And is there an advantage to using oil instead of the other types?

My PJ1 seeps out of the other end of the cable along with crud (dirt mostly) while I am praying it down the cable using one of those lube clamps. I usually have a little residual leak during the first ride but after that I never see a drop.

I use the Door-Ease Dripless Oil. Picked it up from Amazon.com

So far so good.

I feed the CLP in until i see the fresh liquid at the bottom, and execise the snot out of it. I leave them overnight with a rag under them, then reconnect the next day. It generally does not drip after that. It will "sweat" a little dampness out around the lower openings over time, but it's hardly sloppy.

I imagine almost all dealers have them of one kind or another. Take the cable loose at the clutch or throttle. Clamp the little guy on so the barrel is above, the cable runs through, and the cable housing is trapped in the bottom. When you apply the lube into the little hole with the spray nozzle, it's forced all the way to the other end to the clutch housing, or carb. Put a rag at the other end to catch the lube and crude that gets flushed out.

How do you do it without one of these do-dads?

I don't

Re:Cable lube 10 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I tried a combo of ideas on here for the job. I didn't have any cable lube available but I did have a bottle of oil sitting next to me. I removed the cable from the lever, unhooked it at the bottom and then made a makeshift funnel out of masking tape. I poured in a little at a time working the cable to let it seep to the bottom and re-installed everything. I then put a dab of oil on the clutch lever pivot point and all is well for now. The next time I do this job I will make sure I have the proper lube, however. I, for some reason, don't think oil is going to last as long or work quite as well as a proper lube.

Don't forget your throttle cables.
