Oil scavenger needed? 9 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Before I do bike or car maintenance I usually look on Youtube to see if there are better ways to do things than I would normally do them. So before I changed the oil on my Harley, I looked on Youtube. I found a video about an oil scavenger that removes all of the old oil from the Harley engine when changing the oil. They say up to 24 oz. of oil is left in the engine when you change the oil on a Harley twin cam motor. This oil scavenger removes that 24 oz. of oil normally left to mix with the new oil.

So, now I am wondering if the R* is the same way. I'm guessing not because of the separate engine and oil tank drain, but was not really sure. I would have never thought the Harley would have left 24 oz. of oil in the motor either. So does anyone know?

I wouldn't worry about it, there is some left behind but it is negligible.

When you do change your oil add no more than 4qts

It is close to 1 quart that is left in the engine during an oil/filter change.
engine has 5.3 qts of oil in it. 4.3 essentially comes out during an oil change according to yamaha specs.
Everyone just dumps in 4 qts instead of 4.3.

That just plain sucks Greenpus. One quart of dirty oil left when you change the oil doesn't sound like a good idea. You would think the engine designers would come up with a better design. What happens when the new oil doesn't mix very well with the old oil?

I would think any engine is going to have some residual oil left behind during an oil change if you want it totally clean you would need to flush it with clean oil during each service,if you are switching from standard oil to synthetic I just have most people run a shorter oil change interval then change it again with what you plan on using.

Waste of time and money you never get all the oil out of ANY engine.
