Whats the life of your belt 4 Years, 6 Months ago
|
|
|
Had to take off my saddle bags the other day to fix a bracket and thought I would check the belt.
It still looks OK, but I remember readin somewhere that the life of the belt is around 25,000 miles.
I now have 27,000 and all is fine.
What sort of miles are you guys getting from your belts?
Anything I should look for.... besides belt tension?
Thanks in advance.

Well. It's almost broken in then. Keep it adjusted right. Try and keep it reasonably clean. If you ride on gravel roads make sure it doesn't have any little rocks stuck in the belt or pulleys.

i had 41,000 miles on mine with a 3rd of the adjustment used before i killed it due to stupidity.
i´ve seen belts on vulcan 500´s that have over 80,000 miles on the original belt, and have spoken to roadie owners here that have had 70,000 miles on the original belt.
change it when it´s knackered is the bottom line, but it sounds like you´ve got a while to go

Have 43,000 miles on mine, just had it adjusted last summer and its fine, the 25 years experience mechanic told me it can easily last up to ± 65,000 miles if very well maintain. Trying to go beyond that could be hazardous. Besides checking belt tension regularly and cleanliness, there’s not much more you can do.

Timing style belts have very little stretch to them unlike V belts. That is why they are desireable for high torque applications. There is a very good chance that you will see no warning signs of a possible failure. I use them a lot in industry(also worked in plant were they are made) and can tell you for sure that little warning is given. They generally just snap. I personally will follow the Yamaha change interval, which I will now look up for my own records.
Where you will see the wear if any is on the underside(cogged side) Look between the cogs if you can see the internal fibers then replace it right away.

I have 58,000 miles on mine right now. I really don't care what Yamaha says. If that belt does not have any cracking on the inside by the cogs I would not worry about the belt. Depending on how you ride and your weather plays a role in how the belt will last. If you like to put the hammer down alot the belt life will be shortened. Here in the desert we have to deal with the heat taking it's toll on things. But like I said I have a lot of miles on my bike and my belt still looks good and unless I can see a problem I don't fix what ain't broke. IMO!

You have to do what you feel comfortable with. But I can tell you for sure you will not always get warnings like cracking before they just snap.
