changing oil plugs 11 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Hi Fellas,
I am thinking of changing my oil plugs, the plug near the kickstand is starting to round off, and that will be really crappy if it rounds out all the way. Where can I get a new set of plugs? Thanks,
JM

A lot of people are going to auto parts stores and getting magnetic plugs. They also have a (I think) 14mm head on them in case you are having trouble getting the 17mm wrench in there. Just take the old one with you and match it up. Won't hurt anything if it's a little longer.

JM,

Musky's right on. The magnetic ones are great.

The front plug--the one that goes in sideways, from the bike's left-side--would have to be about 8 inches long or more, before it would hit anything. The rear plug--the one that goes in vertically, more to the right-rear of the engine--can be very long, too.

I'm not suggesting there's any benefit to making the bolts longer. I'm just saying, don't worry about it if the auto parts store can't match the length exactly.

(((I always seem to take several paragraphs to say the same thing that Musky and Doc can say in a couple of words )))

Anyway, hope this helps.

Randy, considering your technical writing background, you're just trying to cover all aspects of the topic. It's good to be a little "anal" sometimes.

As Musky said, they have a 14mm head. I got one last month and it works fine. Be sure to get a copper washer for it.It comes with a plastic one
and I don't think it would hold up.

I run the magnetic one in the motor , and like the extra protection that the magnet gives catching loose trash that naturally occurs in a motor. $3.50 of insurance is worth it to me. BB

jetmechanic,

Someone else needs to chime in here, but I read on the forum that getting the correct threads is the critical part. Any of the gurus wanna step up to the plate here?
