Correct grade of gas 4 Years, 5 Months ago
Here in Oz fuel comes in three flavours: regular unleaded 91 octane and premium unleaded in 95 and 98 octane. Dealer says the mid rated 95 octane fuel is the go but I've noticed the clinic supports the lower end stuff. Do we have different systems for rating fuel of is the dealer an idiot (unheard-of I realise but I'll raise the possibility)

Higher octane fuels suppress flash to control knock in higher compression engines. The heat of the engine combined with lower octane will cause the fuel to ignite prematurely under higher compression.

The Wild/Road Star is not a high compression engine, so simply does not need it. In fact, it can lead to build up of carbon from unspent fuels (there is always some, just worse with high octane).

I don't think there would be different scales for octane content, but Maybe Doc will come across this. He would most likely know more about that.

AS Gram says Use the LOWEST octane ...

The RON (Research Octane Number) is what is used in all countries except Canada and the US..

We use a Pump Octane rating ...an average of RON and MON (Motor Octane Number) RON + MON/2

RON 91 is equal to about 86 Pump Octane... the Manual says to use RON 91

Looks like pop has you covered.

Pump octane = (R+M)/2

Thanks,

Doc
