Idle speed 5 Years, 9 Months ago
OK, I'm expecting more than one "DUH!!" for this question. But every bike is different and I'm just learning this one so I'll take the dive. Before the 600 mile service the motor had a nice lope to it at idle after it was warmed up. Now at idle with the clutch out I go a stready 13 mph with my hand off the throttle. I'm thinking that ain't right. (Insert DUHs.) I don't know if it is the idle speed set too high or the choke set wrong so I don't want to adjust the idle down with the choke still not all the way off. I payed for the service so I should take it back but if they can't even get this right with a new customer who just dumped a bundle at their store do I really want them to have another crack at screwing it up?. But if I go tinkering around with it myself and don't do the right thing then I'll probably have to pay someone to fix my fix or worse yet damage the motor. So anyway, Is it supposed to idle at 13mph? Any suggestions? Besides selling the bike because I'm to lamebrained to own one DUH!!

The shop probably set the idle to the recommended rpm; about 850-950.

If it was loping before then it was probably to low. Just turn the idle adjustment knob until you get the 'effect' you want.

However, I would not set it so low that it barely runs

Oil pressure decreases as the revs go down.

Thanks Doc

If that's where it's supposed to be then that's where I'll leave it. Won't say I like it but I don't want to lose oil pressure. It just seemed strange that my bike idles at the speed where the owners manual says to shift into second gear. If they designed it that way it seems kinda strange to me. And at a stop light my windshield bounces like crazy. So how hard is it to hook up a tach to the star and what tach do you folks suggest?

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2006/05/11 00:08

You can go to my index and listen to what my bike sounded like before. It's the 25 wav. It was the nice loping sound that was one of the things that sold me on the bike. Of course I can't prove too low RPMs / low oil pressure / engine damage during break in just by sound so if the dealer had it too low I'm screwed.

Nice pics ..... I forgot what it looked like stock

The idle at 25.wav sounds just a little bit higher that were I have mine set. If that's the sound you like then turn the idle down until you get it.

Most guys have been turning the idle down from stock but I've heard of guys really lopping the engine until it barely runs. My oil pressure caution was just for info not to turn it too low.

My buddy has a small square (1x2&quot digital mini tach that he uses. I use my finely tuned auditory instrument.

The owners manual is incorrect regarding shift points. You'll lug it if you try and shift at those points ...... which causes more damage than lowering your idle speed.

fitting a tach is a doddle. i fitted one due to the embarresment of hitting the rev limiter when out dragging cars for fun.

mine is distributed by highway hawk, part nº 67-119. 60mm diameter, black face, chrome case and bracket. it´s not expensive.

mounted mine between the risers just at the bottom of my normal line of vision

Yeah, the stock pics are nice to have cuz not many bikes stay looking that way for long. When you first pick it up it's almost a toss up between riding it and getting on the web to start the goodies search. The first time I read the owners manual I knew those shift points wouldn't cut it. I've always used the "time to shift ear" and it's served me well. Thanks again for clearing that up. This is my least favorite part of getting a new bike. You haven't got to know it well enough to know if it's natural to the breed or something wrong.

Thanks erizo

I was looking at some and the Pro one says it plugs right in to the wiring which is a plus for me. Usually when I get near anything with juice smoke starts billowing, sparks fly, and all the pretty colors on my wires go away And it looks like it replaces the stock tripple tree clamp so it would have a nice look. They are kinda spendy though.

But you can get a white-faced one to match your bike.

Yeah, saw that. Pretty sure that's what will push me past the "Really don't need it" line.

Just out of curiousity, if anyone with a tac mounted on a 1700 wants to check what RPMs 13 mph is I'd like to know just for the hell of it.
Thanks

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2006/05/11 11:31
