MPG vs. mods 6 Years ago
Has anyone seen positive MPG results from simple mods such as AIS removal, a BAK or exhaust? assuming you tune it correctly? I'm really on the fence right now about buying a BAK (AIS removal kit here, just need to do it, exhaust is in the mail) and MPG would probably push me over, the bike has enough power for me as it sits, I'm not looking to drag anyone

Anyways, any thoughts from people experiences from doing these mods individually or combined would be appreciated

AIS is a no-brainer. Much better looking bike without it, doesn't affect gas mileage, and a must if you have after-market pipes.

A better air-box helps the bike breath better. With both the pipes and an air-box you'll definitely see a re-juvinated bike. As for gas mileage, I've never been concerned with it (I'd buy a scooter if I was ) but I don't see much of a change than before.

Pipes by themselves don't do much; performance- (usually a decrease in street performance) or gas-wise.

It appears some may be getting worse mileage but I belive this is caused by too rich jetting.

That's my thoughts ..... and my head hurts.

Soma,

I had some of the same concerns some time ago as you do now. I was getting around 50 mpg on most rides with my bike stock. If you go back in the forum and look under "BAK" or something like that you'll find me asking Doc the same questions you just did! I have a 2005 RS Silverado and worked my mods in this order:

1) Got Vance and Hines Powershots and never touched my carburetor. Bike still ran fine, though, and mpg wasn't noticeably different from before.
2) Put Baron's ported manifold and BAK air filter on bike (also removed AIS at same time). In this step I jetted my carburetor with the clip on four and the PMS screw set at three. Main Jet was 172.5. With this jetting, my bike's performance was awesome -- but bike was running rich, spark plugs were black and I was concerned about "sticky valves" about which I'm sure you've read.
3) I rejetted setting the needle clip at 3 but the bike's performance was pitiful. Then I finally settled on leaving the clip at 3 but putting a .020 washer on the end of the needle to raise it a half step. I found that I had to adjust my PMS screw in to about 2. With these settings, my bike is running strong and, believe it or not, I'm back up to around 50 mpg on my weekend rides.
These rides are mostly out on country roads and speeds are around 60 to 65 -- some interstate riding around 75. I'm sure if I pushed it harder the mileage would be less but I ride at the speed I like and am comfortable with. If the mileage is good, that's a plus!
4) Forgot to mention that I also added the Dyna 3000 along with the BAK and set the rev limiter at 5500. My friend, who's a more experienced biker, took the bike out and hit 45 in first gear, 70 some odd in 2nd gear and had to cease and desist at that point when he encountered a policeman! Bike is more than quick enough for me. Ran it up to 110 while with a buddy on a Road King and I still had throttle left. I think he was impressed!

Good luck getting your bike the way you want it.
