Greysnake, I'm glad someone else besides me here knows what mukluks are! I'll tell you, there is nothing that'll keep your feet warmer than mukluks in real cold temperatures.
Oh and you can't buy 'em at Wal-Mart....not even at Super Wal-Mart!
Can only get them from native Indian or Inuit friends.

A few months ago MOTORCYCLE PRODUCT NEWS had an article on motorcycle oils. I requested info from all of the various companies; from most you get a one page pamphlet. From AMSOIL you get a 28 page booklet!

AMSOIL took 12 types of 10W40 and 16 types of 20W50 oilsw to an independant lab and told them to test them all! The booklet you get is the compilation of those tests. They show all of the charts and graphs of the results.

I do not see how anyone can read that information and not see that AMSOIL is the best. MOBILE 1 is second best. AMSOIL suggests that you double the manufacturers recomended oil change interval!

Things brings up a topic that I've wondered about for a while....do those of you using synthetic oil increase the interval between oil changes? If so, by how much? What impact would increasing the interval between oil changes have on your manufacturer's warrantee?

Thanks.

Hey Yakman

Speaking for myself. I don't use syn to extend change intervals. I've always changed the oil in my bikes between 3500 and 4 grand. We have the motor, clutch, and tranny all using the same oil. It takes a beating. Could I go farther between changes? Yup. Many do. But I opt not to. As far as affecting the warranty, how are they going to know unless you tell them?

Musky, I think your thoughts on the idea are good. When compared to the overall cost of owning and operating our bikes, trying to stretch a few more miles out between oil changes probably doesn't make much sense. I'd rather have a little more piece of mind knowing the oil is still doing its thing than hearing a little more coin in my pocket. Thanks.

I don't advocate longer change intervals but if you think about it it makes perfect sense. Today's engine produce far fewer contaminates than they did 30 years ago but most manufacturers still recommend the same change interval.

The one thing I have against extended oil changes is the fact that a lot can happen to an engine over that period of time. Frequent oil changes gives you a chance to head off trouble by examining the oil and filter or better yet send your oil out for analysis. This is not very common for owners of land vehicles but I used to do it for aircraft engines.

On the subject of Amsoil, the only things I know is that it is not API approved, cost too much, usually can't be bought locally, you need to add shipping costs, you have to be a super special member so that you can buy it at a discount which is still over priced and they have a very bizarre business practice. They claim to "meet or exceed" API standards but that phrase doesn't mean much to me.

Re:Mobil 1 V-Twin Synthetic Oil 11 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Hey guys,

I respect your take on this, but here’s what I’ve experienced. I don’t use Mobil1 but I’ve started using Amsoil MCV 20W-50 two years ago; the first time, I did my oil change at 5,000 miles and the second time, I pushed the envelope and went up to 6,200miles and the Roadie always runned smooth and never had any SVS problems. As Clifford said, Amsoil claims we can double the oil change interval, but personally I won’t stretch my luck and go as far as 7,460 miles (Yamaha recommend 3,730miles). The surprising thing is when I flushed the Amsoil out at 6,200 miles, it was less filthy than when I flushed the ordinary oil at 3,730 miles, go figure!

The MCV cost me 58$ instead of 16$ but I change it only once a season now, so the way I figure it, I get an increase in overall performance and longer oil change interval for the excess 42$ I’ve paid. So with a 66% mileage increase between oil change intervals, I think it’s worth it.

I have a bottle of MCV 20W-50 in my hands and its API SG, SL/CF and JASO MA approved.

My 2¢

Hey RG

One of the benifits of synthetic oil is it cleans the insides out much better than dino. After you change from dino to syn you'll notice how clean it comes out after 2 or 3 changes. I usually run RP 20/50 car oil. But it has gone up in price. I have a Carquest near me that sells Amsoil and Mobile 20/50 for the same price as the RP is now at NAPA. So I have 3 options for oil now. If my Roadie likes all three I'll get whichever is on sale. All car oil of course. I'm still not convinced I need to run bike oil
