Hey Musky,
I was wondering what dino meant so I went on the web and found it means dinosaur like in Neanderthal, that’s funny! 
Why do you persist using car oil in your bike, is it a question of cost or overall performance? 
I’m very satisfied with Amsoil and I’m gonna use it for the third time next summer. It’s available in my neighbourhood, so no hassle there. I change the oil filter at each oil change, I use Yamaha or K & N, they’re both compatible with synthetic. 
And BTW, MCV meets SAE 80W/90, API GL-1 gear oil requirements.

I use car oil because I don't believe that higher priced bike specific oil does anything better. It just costs more. So yup, it's a cost thing but not because I'm trying to take the cheap way out. When and if It's proven to me that bike specific oil really has benifits I'll switch in a heart beat.
Disclaimer. Just my opinion on bike oil. Not trying to tell anyone what to use.  |

V-twin motorcycle specific oil has an extremely high flashpoint which goes a long way in preventing SVS...oil burn off in the air cooled V-twin can cause oil deposits on the valves which can cause valves to stick...
high heat oil breakdown
Reading the article posted on valves sticking in aircraft motors brings this to question...
Liquid cooled car motors do not run as hot as aircooled V-twin or
aircraft engines...that is why only synthetic oil is used in aircraft motors..
Musky is the flashpoint high enough on your car oil as it is on motorcycle specfic oils ...or are you flirting with SVS ??? |

I run a motorcycle repair shop. I carry AMSOIL 10W40 & 20W50. The 10W40 sells for $9.20 per qt and the 20W50 sells for $9.50 per qt. 4 qt @ $9.50 = $38.00. An EMGO 10 micron chrome filter is $15.25; and Florida sales tax is 7%. For $57.00 you get 4 qt of oil, a chrome filter & you have $1 .00 change from your $58.00.

May I suggest that you call 715-392-8491; a machine will answer; press the selection for powersports. You can talk to an AMSOIL TECH and find out what the difference between automotive and motorcycle oils are. The differences are substantial. I presume that you would get similar information from any oil company. It is recomended that on the road if you need oil and motorcycle oil isn't available use diesel oil and change back to motorcycle oil soon as possible after getting back to civilation!
Automotive engine oil doesn't do anything except lubricate the engine; it has nothing to do with the clutch or transmission or anything else. On all motorcycles except Harleys; the engine includes the clutch, the transmission, and the starter mechanism.

I've read all the info but I also know there are people with many many thousands of miles on their bikes and they have never run anything but car oil. They haven't had any problems. So there's the rub. I can talk to people who make money selling the oil. They tell me I need to use bike oil. Or I can go by the real world experience of riders that indicates what the oil vendors say isn't so.
What I would like to see is at least some proof. Just one bike that has been damaged by running car oil ( non Friction modified oil). And it can be proven that the oil did it.

Oh. By the way. I emailed Amsoil once stating that I liked their oil but wouldn't pay what the were asking for the bike specific oil. I received a reply saying that their 20/50 car oil would be fine to run in my bike. Many do and have no complaints. So which line of theirs do I believe? |
