Pipe dis-colour/Fuel smell 6 Years ago
I bought a pre-owned 02 a couple of months ago. It has slip-on drag pipes.and what I can see is the AIS, from looking at my Clymer manual, has been removed, everything else seems stock. I have a couple of questions.
First, the top pipe (rear cyl) has turned gold where the slip-on is connected to the factory pipe. What would have caused this? Cheap pipes?
Second, friends behind me say they can smell fuel when we go out riding. Would this be the AIS removal causing the smell or is it running to rich (wrong jets if they have been changed)? I get about 230 kms to a tank of fuel.
The bike runs great, seems to have lots of power. I have not rode any other Roadstar to compare too. I know I can blow away my 2 bothers Harley's, Ha-Ha!!!!

The gold color indicates lean running IIRC...blue is usually rich again IIRC...the gas smell could be a number of things but a raw gas smell would seem to me to be a leaking fuel line, petcock or tank seal...is there any drip that is noticeable around the bike? where>

Regards, Ted

So if gold is being lean, then I would assume the bike has not been re-jetted.

No fuel leaks, they say exhaust smell, smells like fuel. I can't notice a smell when it is idling.

Ted has it backwards (easy to do Ted) ..... gold is rich, blue is lean.

Lean mean hotter exhaust which causes the pipes to turn blue. A rich setup means the engine runs cooler thus the pipes are gold.

It's not uncommon to see a golden coloured pipe where the header connects to the rear pipe. Check out some Longshots or Cobra drags around the seat area.

If you can smell gas and your choke is in, then your carb is too rich. It's not uncommon to find that folks change out the pipes, stay with the stock air-box but re-jet the carb. This is usually not necessary and can result in a too rich condition.

I would check out the jets and needle settings.

230 is pretty close; around town I get about 260 when the light goes on.

I always thought blue was rich... get blue pipes from running with the choke on to long.. (bad plug on a virago, had to keep it running - ruined the stock pipes- good excuse to get drag pipes *grin*)~Guido

This could all depend on who you talk to I think. It's heat that does it but I've heard both reasons for causing the heat. I've alway thought that gold and blue were just different stages. Goes from yellow to gold to blue. I've also heard that blue by the motor is lean and blue farther down the pipe is rich. Something about the gas building up behind the baffles and burning there causing blue. That was directed towards Harley but a pipes a pipe. Ain't it

I had the same problem with the preowned 03 I bought, like doc said it could be the joint at the slip on is not sealed good. Mine was pulled apart a little bit, and the top pipe behind the joint was a gold color. I pulled it apart and cleaned it and tried to remove the gold color. Got a little bit of it with steel wool, but not all of it. Good excuse to get new pipes.
