Hey eagle_man - finishing a bunch of mods right now and my carb is doing the exact same thing as yours, shooting gas out of the carb. Mine stops if I pull out the choke and push in back in but it still drools out gas unless I keep the revs up to about 2500 or so.

Set-up:
2.5mm float needle
Mik 170
37.5 pilot (#35 back order)
clip on 5th (washer, clip, spacer, washer) waiting to do WOT (still winter up here)
pms out 2.5
float set to level mating surface on intake side (on the bench)
ais gone

I'll go in after lunch and check the needle arrangement to make sure something didn't fall off on assembly. Re-check the float (this time on the bike). Don't believe anything is hung up - tapped all around and cleaned entire carb while out of the bike, polished the slide, everything. Very anal about keeping in clean while working on it - but anything is possible.

Oh yeah. Does the slide go all the way to the bottom of the carb when it's relaxed? There is a goove in the wall of the carb to allow this but mine stops about mid-way down. I could have sworn that's the way it was on dissassembly but...

Eagle_man, mine is idling rough too but it may be the fact that we don't have the gas flowing right. I also just installed a tach so it's the first time I've actually seen my rpms. I'm getting good revs though. I still need to go out and recheck it all.

Well I did some more troubleshooting. Hope this isn't hi-jacking your thread Eagle_man but it seems we have the same issues. See my post in Tech Tips and maybe it will help you access your set-up better.

I pulled the titanium needle to make sure all washers, etc. were in place and it was fine. Checked the float level on the bike and it was too high which really bugs me because on the bench it was dead on. I adjusted it 4 times and I can't seem to find consistency in my adjustments. I'm doing something wrong. Maybe I have a crack in the float. It couldn't be as simple as a missing washer on the small set screw that holds the float shaft in place? Could it? Allowing it to move around a bit. It seems tight and it was missing when I opened it and it was fine (rich) before I opened it.

My choke seems to be related. If I pull it out then push it back in then the gas won't shoot across the room when I turn on the pump. It still is pouring too much gas in because it comes right out the drain hose (holding it above the carb). The pump will push it right out the hose and also out the carb. You can see it draining right down the slide. Could it be that 2.5mm float needle? I did take the choke cable off the carb when I removed it but I was careful and kept the spring and all together but maybe there is a right way to re-attach it.

Don't quite know where to go from here. Going to have to get a happy float level first then take the cable off again and re-attach it. Any thoughts.

The float needle valve controls the flow into the carb bowl. The valve closes off the flow of gas when the float level rises. I suspect it's not happening in your case.

Take the carb to the bench. Take the bowl off. Set it up so that the top is level. Hook up a gas line and attach a small funnel of something else that will hold some gas making sure it's higher than the carb. Fill up the fuel line ... the water should come out the bottom of the carb. Lightly compress the float until the water stops flowing. If it doesn't stop completely then you're seat or valve is bad.

It's more accurate to use gas but it's quite messy.

Re:Carb Problems!!! 4 Years, 3 Months ago
Thanks Doc - it's on tomorrows hit list. I'm going to bypass the pump 1st, while it's all hooked up and eliminate a pump pressure problem. Mess with the float level at least one more time. Then hit the bench with your set-up. It is a new 2.5 mm float needle and seat so I hope that's not the problem. Is the gas shooting (about 4' across the floor) out of the carb anything to do with the float needle? It is the port next to the air jet and the gas shoots straight out of it when I turn on the pump. If I pull the enricher knob and push it back in it won't shoot out but still runs down the slide.

So, I just read where there is a small detent ball at the end of the choke cable that gets lost and that pulling on the cable separates the sheathing which enrichens the set up. Nice, I did both.

Not sure if that is all my trouble but it is a problem I'll get on tomorrow. Thank you Gram for your post about 4 months ago - that's the one I read.

Re:Carb Problems!!! 4 Years, 3 Months ago
Just an update in case someone learns by my mistake, even though I think this thread fizzled out. Well, I mistakenly capped the vent tube at the top left of the carb and this was causing all my gas shooting out the carb issues, gas flowing out like the float needle was stuck, and inconsistent results when setting the float level. Yeah, too many variables to sort out. Took that damn cap off and everything fell in place. It sounds and runs (in the shop) like it never has and it starts cold with the enricher out and when hot with just a touch of the starter. Not hardly one revolution - sweet.

So, I'm back to the start of tuning the new set-up:

Mik 170
37.5 pilot until 35 comes in
2.5mm float needle and seat
5th clip waiting to do WOT this spring
AIS capped

Thank you for all your help and I'm sure I'll be seeing you in 'Jetting' when the time comes.
