Just had a nice ride on sunday for CMN in Danville Pa. The wheather man called for a sunny day and 78 deg. Thank God he was wrong I hoped and prayed it would rain. I felt so lucky I got my wish. Anyway, my Midnight * got a very nice 47 mpg on mid grade gas.

05 midnight star silverado (hard packs & windshield), speedstar filter, self ported intake, stage 1 mod to the stock exhaust, baron's jet kit, 167.5 on the 3rd or 4th, pms 1 3/4 out, Ais intact but disabled. milage not effected by having the wife on board:
ave: 50 mpg
55mph back country roads: 53mpg
75mph highways: 47mpg
really conservative: I don't drive that way...
really standing on it (hot doggin it every light, highwaying it around 100mph): 42mpg
carb set as lean as she will go and still spin the tire in 1st. don't even think about starting it without the choke, unless she's still hot, not warm, hot. needs a little more warm up time at 1/2 choke... ~Guido

Got a 02 Midnight * with ais removed, fuel pump removed, speed * ignition, comp. air cleaner. Jetted with 165 main clip on the 4th notch 45 pilot with the pms out 3 3/4 turns on the stock intake that I ported. Cobra staggerd straights with thunder monsters. Ahh, and a torque master. Add all that up and it means I have an irresistible urge to twist the noise maker. This all happened after I ran across this site last fall. Thanks everybody for the great tips and advice!!! BTW 47mph

Hey Vegas Dave, ditto. Love the cleaned up look on the left side of the engine. Been ridin down here in Phoenix. It was 112 the other day. Not too bad as long as you keep moving. Haven't checked the MPG since new pipes and the jet kit. 2003 Silverado w/ longshots and dynojet stage one.

Doc,
I'm almost embarrassed to tell you the mileage I got on my bike this past Saturday. Rode 222 miles before my low fuel light came on and when I gassed up, it would only take 3.8 gallons (58 mpg). That's far and away the best mileage I've gotten with the bike, although 50 and lower 50s is fairly common. The whole ride was fairly low speed -- around 60. Toward the end of the ride I was beginning to think my low fuel light was burned out but I knew I still had the reserve if needed. Low fuel light came on when I was almost home and I actually filled up at the same station and pump that I filled up with at the start of the ride.
I'm beginning to think that I may have gone overboard with the jetting trying to keep it toward the lean side! Seem to have plenty of power, though, and bike doesn't appear to be running too hot. I got the idea from reading some of Odo's comments that it was just about impossible to run the Road Star too lean -- that performance would take a big hit before that would happen. That's the reason I went in this direction. Is there anything you think I should check or watch to make sure I'm not too lean?

pday,
"I'm almost embarrassed" .... and you should be!
That's great! Probably a result of correct jetting, cruising speed, road conditions, etc.
I agree with Odo's comments. Most riders have their bikes set up too rich. I know that since changing pipes I've been slowly leaning mine out. Although I haven't seen a drop in performance, I do note that I'm getting less and less carbon deposits.
When is it too lean? Don't know. Odo's been trying leaner and leaner settings and the bikes still run well. I'd probably keep leaning it out until there's little carbon depositing in the pipes and the plugs aren't black.
