No .... just add another sliver washer.

Why are you adding another exhaust gasket. I'm understanding that the bike is coughing and sputtering (missing). Are you saying that the exhaust are popping but the bike does not 'hesitate' or 'miss' at cruising speed?

At steady speed it coughs and sometimes back fires if I give it gas it run good until it levels out. Idle is so so I found the nuts on the pipes had backed off the other day and I tightened them down again and checked several times now. I cranked it up when it was dark not sparking under the tank. After I first cranked it up I ran my hands all around the head pipe and I didn't feel any leaks.

I was having that problem which was exasperated after a recent fill-up with gas. Puttered and sputtered unless I gave the throttle a hefty yank. I remembered a car I had acting like that so I tried the same solution. Changed out the fuel filter and put some gas line anti-freeze in to dry up any water in the tank. Bike runs like a charm now. Also put the K & N filter on so somewhere between the 2 was the fix.

Well I swapped out he carb this weekend with the spare one and changed the fuel filter. The second carb didn't have a needle assembly and had some other brand of jets. I used all my jets and needle setup from my old carb. Put it back togeather and when I cranked it fuel come out the carb overflow. I guess the float is stuck or the guy took out the needle and seat. I should have checked it but everything looked stock so I just figured the float hadn't been messed with. The carb was really clean couldn't have but just a few miles on it. The diaphram is in great shape and the choke cable is real good shape too. I will have to drop the bowel and take a look. It is raining and going to snow tonight and the rest of the week is going to suck so I have some time to mess with it.

I've been following along and everyone has had great suggestions. Keep at it your going to hit on it soon.
My pennies worth...
While you in there under the seat and behind the left side cover look at the wires to the ignition module. I had a problem when the starter cable off the relay rubbed through the insulation on a couple wires and caused some sputtering and cutting out. It's an unlikely thing but a quick look, no bare spots on the wires, connections tight, ect.
Good Luck

Did I mention you have water in your gas? Why, yes I did. Did you pay attention? Nooooooo. I drop my pearls of wisdom and you just kick em under the work bench.
