The engine is still tight and the zing noise it the starter doing a back run which is normal so don't sweat it. The other is the piston kicking back on the compression stroke after you've turn it off and that to is normal. Everything will settle down after you get a few K on it.

Teal,
There have been posts before about that Ziiiiing sound (I hear it, too, on occasion). The more techy folks will step in, but if I remember right, that has something to do with the starter backing off its spring.
I get the occasional pop, too, but if I let her idle drop after stopping before shutting down, I get nothing.

No problem. When I first got my '05, I took it to the dealership 3 times because I thought the engine was coming apart inside, especially at the higher end of the gears. The Clinic guys settled me right down and helped me identify the various rumbles and grumbles and fix a few of the rattles and clinks.
I find that when I smile hard enough, the tight facial muscles close off my ear canals, and I don't hear as much noise.

The starter works through a "ratchet" mechanism called a SPRAGUE clutch. When you push the button the starter turns the engine. when the engine is running the starter is not disengaged, but the clutch prevents the engine from turning the starter. If one of the cylinders is on the compression stroke, and as it shuts down the compression causes it to flip backwards momentarily then the backwards moving engine turns the starter backwards and that is the noise thet you hear.
If one of the plugs fires just as the engine stops that is the pop that you hear.
Neither one should happen all the time; but when it does happen it is normal.

My 01 has done that a couple of times to.I think it is because the rear cylinder stops firing first and the front piston is on it's way up on the compression stroke and sometimes makes the last spark before you ignition is tuned off and this can cause it to pop. Not sure if there is some other way to explain it. My 78 xs1100 will do it to if you turn the key off and on a couple of times, and never caused any problems.
