Suggested Rubber 5 Years, 11 Months ago
Hey all~

Looking at replacing the rear shoe on my roadie and had a Continental Conti Tour on it at the suggestion of a friends mechanic but don't recommend that one. Only had around 5000 and it's almost bare. Any suggestions on a good wearing tire for our Roadies? I know they came with Bridgestone originally when purchased and that seemed to wear good and I've got another buddy that's running Metzler's and he's pretty impressed. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Post edited by: TwoEagleStar, at: 2006/06/19 10:07

The most popular tires for replacement on Road Stars are Metzler and Avon. The Metzlers have a little better treadlife, perhaps because the Avon's are a softer and thus 'stickier' rubber. If thats true, performace should be a little better wiith the Avon's assuming you are comparing brand new metz to brand new avon.

I have always run the Metzlers. Peformance is excellent, and tread lif is pretty decent. If you don't push that big bore to its limits too much, you should get better tread life than the stock Bridgestones.

The Metz stick better, and resist 'groove grabbing' better than the stockers. Cornering with them is excellent.

FWIW... The Avons are really popular with the crotch rocket crowd. If you want absolute best performance in a corner, they are probably better. But tread life is just not as good as the metz. Thats why I stick with Metzler. Seems to be a good compromise between tread life and performance.

You will really like them.

You can still tear up the twisties, and for some reason (can't explain it) they seem to be more in harmony with the bike. You will think you are drivng a smaller more responsive bike if you replace both the front and rear.

I'll second Gram's comments. I switched to the Metzler ME880s and, honestly, it was like riding a different bike. Bike is so much more responsive and easy to handle. Of all the things I've done to my bike, I really believe the Metzlers added the most noticeable value!

Pday~

Thanks for the updated info. I was just about to post back out to GRAM what series he was running but you answered that for me. I was going to go with the ME880 series but wanted to be sure. I'll get the new rubber ordered right away. Thanks again guys!!

Re:Suggested Rubber 5 Years, 11 Months ago
i like to check out tyres on my bike before i recommend them to clients that have roadies. due to the way i ride, by the time a rear is due, the front one is getting borderline so i change them as a set.

here´s what i´ve found so far (2000 road star bought new in 2001 )....

original dunlops - can´t remember the model nº, competent, but nothing spectacular. 9,500 miles to 2.5mm

michelin commanders - quite good. stick well, o.k. in the wet, lasted 10,000

pirelli mt66 - good and sticky, good in the wet. i did find that the handling started to get a bit twitchy with 3mm of tread left (take your hands off the bars at 70mph, and the bars wag a bit). 9,000 miles to 2.5mm

dunlop d404 - not good. never inspired confidence due to a sort of slight `squirmy´feeling. not that sticky dry, but suprisingly secure feeling in the rain. 10,000 miles to 2.5mm, and i couldn´t wait to get rid of them!

metzeler me880 - oh yeah!! these are the daddy! stick like crap to a blanket at all angles of lean, superb in the rain, and because the tyre compound lets me use my brakes to their full potential (R1 calipers with braided lines, A.P.racing pads), it stops better. seem to be wearing o.k.

i change and balance my own tyres here at the shop, so i know for sure that they are set up perfectly to start with.

Post edited by: erizo, at: 2006/06/20 04:41

Hey erizo,

I was trying to give you a Karma for that nice write up you did about tires and I hit the wrong button! So you're two karma short of where you should be! Sorry about that. Will try to correct later! Thanks for passing on your valuable experience!
