How Dare you 5 Years, 11 Months ago
Since I bought this RoadStar, several friends have said to me,"but you used to ride Harleys, why didn't you get another Harley?" Whether they are riders or not it seems that some think it to be the ultimate blasphemy to ride anything other than a Harley after been an HD rider. Perhaps it is somewhat daring to move on but whats daring about getting more bike for less bucks? Have any other RoadStar Clinic members experienced this same reaction?

From a few...

But most long time riders don't react that way.

They respect my right to ride what I choose.

Maybe it's just a question without any hidden meaning. When I buy a new car I often get asked "Why did you buy a ???".

I've experienced attitudes from HD riders when on my R* but the behaviour is not restricted to HD riders. I've also noticed it from some people 'cause my house is not big enough, my clothes are not 'in' this year, I don't drive a certain brand, etc.

Love some of the HD's and wish that I could afford (the room) to have more than one cruiser.

As I said, only some people react with surprise. I myself said many times after selling my last Harley that if I found myself riding again that it could be nothing but a Harley but back in 1980 there was nothing else that would satisfy that feeling of cruising on a thundering v-twin. That certainly isn't the case today and this were their suprise comes from and to be honest with you, my surprise too. When purchasing the Roadie there was a little voice in the back of my head saying "what will others say" but I figured it's my money and I couldn't see spending so many thousands more just quiete some critics. As it turned out the Roadie has given me so much more to smile about than I had anticipated. I will always like HDs and in fact like bikes of all styles but my point is that some can't bring themselves to be seen on anything but a Harley and some of us "dare" to ride a different label. I don't like to hear that "only my bike is such and such" elementary school playground talk. If you like riding, ride what ever you want and can afford. People who truly love riding can appreciate whatever you ride. Live to ride and ride to live.

Some have said the same to me. But it is more from the guys that do not ride. One guy even said " well I guess you can only buy what you can afford" but I just smile knowing I have a KICK#*s bike and he does'nt. Ride On.......Gary

"Other people's opinion of me is none of my damm business!" This quote has served me well on the road of life. If I'm worried about what "I think other people might be thinking about me," I'm stuck in a very crazy space. First of all; I can't know what other people might be thinking. 2nd; what they think is just something they made up about me which may or may not have anything real about it. They just made it up. Whenever I catch myself thinking about what other people might think about me I just remind myself the their opinion is none of my business. My business is to enjoy my ride, improve on it as I see fit, and honor the other fellow's choice to enjoy his trip the way he sees fit.

Post edited by: JMayton, at: 2006/06/22 19:55

the `why didn´t you buy a harley?´ question i´ve found comes more from non bike riders here (normally after they say `nice harley´, and i tell them it´s a yamaha)

however there is a certain joy in, when asked by a harley rider why you didn´t buy a harley, replying with their favourite mantra.....

`if i gotta explain, you wouldn´t understand´

I had a 1973 FXE back in the day...now, most of my scooter trash friends are very impressed by the R*...I tell the hardcore HD riders in the lot that I had a Harley and I have found I prefer riding my motorcycle to working on it I also mention that I got a lot more bike for a lot less dollars...I do this not because I feel the need to defend my decision but to tweak their noses!

There is a reason Sonny Barger says the Hells Angels blew it by sticking with HD That's true BTW

Regards, Ted

My father in law bought an 05 HD Roadking, I got the new 05 Yammi Roadstar.
Eveywhere we go people comment that the Roadie is a beautiful, nicer looking bike than the Harley and it has a bigger more torquey engine.
I then enjoy to tell them that I paid half as much $ for my Yammi than my father in law spent on his Harley
The Roadstar is twice the bike a Harley is, for half as much dough. In my opinion.
...But, Everybody gets to spend and ride what HE HIMSELF sees fit in my book.
