Shoe rubber on pipes 5 Years, 10 Months ago
My son left part of his shoes on my pipes.
What's the best way to get it off?

Get the pipes hot and try wiping it off with a cotton cloth. That should get alot of it. Then you can try (with pipes still hot or reheated) oven cleaner. WD40 works alot of times. . I've heard that a brass brush or 000 or 0000 steel wool won't hurt the chrome but never tried it. Don't want to find out it does scratch. I'm sure more people here will come up with other cures.

Buy new pipes

What Muskie said. Once they have cooled, you can also use a razor blade (the old kind) and put is almost parallel to the pipes to 'lift' the rubber off.

Yeah, your gonna get new pipes anyway. This is the perfect opportunity. Doc mentioned razor blades. If you are nervous about this they do make plastic razor blades for just this kind of problem.

EZ Off oven cleaner and a popcycle stick works pretty darned well. Be very careful where you get the EZ Off though. It can remove paint also.

use the edge of a nickel I've used it my understanding is that the metal in the nickle is softer than the chrome... works great... don't need a lot of pressure, doesn't scratch the chrome ~Guido

Use 00 or 000 steel wool and light pressure, hot or cold pipes. Will work great and no scratching. I've done it plent of times of the years with all my bikes, my wife can't seem to figure out that when you run the engine the pipes get hot, imagine that!

Lacquer thinner! Slightly warm pipe...works like a charm...avoid the steel wool except as a last resort (too much pressure and it does scratch), etc...

BTDT...mine had 200 miles on it when my wife left her boot bottoms on my BRAND new pipes...I have to tell you, it did cross my mind that if I had one biker on the jury I'd never get convicted
