Electrical Problem 5 Years, 10 Months ago
Howdy All.

Hey, last night I had to lay my 2005 Roadstar down in order to avoid hitting a large dog. I was only going 10 mph, so not much damage done to the bike - the left saddle bag was dented in, but I fixed it; and the front left light lamp was jarred out of whack. So, this morning, I opened up the front left lamp and tightened up the lamp, it looks good as new. Also, I noticed that one of the red wires leading to the left signal lamp was exposed, so I wrapped it with electrical tape.

I then put the key in the bike and turned it to the 'on' position. From there, the lights came on, but I noticed that the odometer needle didn't move from left to right then back to zero - instead, it just layed there. And the digital odometer display wasn't on - the horn doesn't work - the signals won't turn on - and the rear brake won't light up when I push on the brakes - the green 'Neutral' light won't come on, but the high and low 'blue' light will come on. BTW, the bike will start and the rear tail light and the plate light work.

Any suggestions as to what might be going on? I don't know much about the electrical system of the bike, but it sounds like a fuse is out. I've got to wonder if the exposed wire might have shorted out something.

Help??????

The fuses are behind the left side cover. That's the first place I would check. Might want to double check the wires to be sure you got all the bare ones or you might blow your new fuse all over again.

X-Ray, does your headlight still come on when you turn the key on? I too had some exposed wires inside my headlight pot (2 days old right from the stealership) the little insulation sleeves slid off the connectors and wire going to passing lamps was stripped bare inside the mounting tube and caused the two fuses to fry, made the fuel gauge and odo go wonky too. I then checked the whole front end inside and out for shorts to be sure.

FIXED IT!!!!!!

Thanks for all the help, guys. I just love this website.

I pulled the 10 amp fuse from the 'signal' fuse slot and the 10 amp fuse was fried. So I put the spare 10 amp in the 'signal' fuse slot - now everything works. I guess that when I was messing around with the front left lamp, I must have shaved the rubber off of one of the wires to the left signal light; then it must have touched some metal and blew the fuse. Anyway, now it works.

Again, thanks guys.

i had the exact same thing happen to my 02 road* 2 weeks ago. i had just replaced the tail light with an LED light, and i was going to fix my front turn signal. all of the sudden i had nothing except the starter and headlight. after a day of troubleshooting what i had just done, i decided to pull off the fuse cover. there it was a blown turnsignal fuse. not sure what did it, but it was an easy fix.

Post edited by: hartick, at: 2006/07/15 00:47

Just a suggestion, but everytime I go to work on any kind of lights, I pull the fuse from the box to do the work and then replace to test with the side cover off. This ensures that I know the fuse is good if there are problems with the lights. Once everything is good, just replace the side cover and ride!!
