I wonder if you could have a small pocket of Water sitting in your bowl?

A mechanic at the dealership told me that if you ever find water in your fuel filter you need to go ahead and drain your bowl as well. He said it would sit in there and only cause trouble when you gas it hard enough to pull some of it out just like BB said. Theres a little allan screw on the back side of the carb to drain it.

Be sure and let us know what you find out.

Stock bike .... stored for a couple of years .... I think your carb is gummed up a bit. It doesn't take much to restrict the jets and at steady speed is where you're going to notice it as it takes only a little gas to maintain speed.

I'd recommend cleaning the carb out thourghly ... you'll need to dissassemble it.

...I swung by the dealer yesterday and was telling the Mechanic about it. He initially blamed it on drilling the baffles. I wasn't buying it and he took it for a spin. When he got back he seemed puzzled. When he opened the gas cap there was a bit of surface rust around the rim of the tank where the gas cap sits and on the cap as well. He asked how it was stored over the winter. I told him I bought the bike 1-27-08 and when I left with it I put it in a pole barn with a full tank...

The rust in the tank was eating me, so I drained the tank and it was full of rust! Was able to get about 1/2 cup of junk out of it from the size of an m&m down to crumbs. Fuel filter was all clogged up as well.

Ever seen this on your bikes? I'm not sure how they stored it but I would still think it shouldn't rust that bad in a couple of years.

They are replacing the tank and fuel filter, will have it back by friday. Should I have them replace everything from the tank back or is that unreasonable? 300 miles on it and already problems...

Well , that explains your problem. Take Docs advice and break the carb down for a good cleaning , it WILL need it. Something is restricted in a passage somewhere. There is a "strainer" in line to the carb just outside the inlet to the carb, clean it as well. And, get a new filter, as this too will have trash in it.

Yes , I have seen tanks rust up in a 2 year period , mainly because they were stored without being filled up first. That empty space above the fuel line inside the tank is susceptible to moisture , which in turn brings.....rust.

If it is really rusty, you can treat it with a number of products, but a word of caution, these products are Very hard on paint. I have used Kreem tank liner on several bikes, works like a charm. But , hopefully you can rinse it really well, and use it from there. This will most likely fix your problem, which is good news. BB

After a reread, I see you're having a shop fix it. Carb will need a cleaning though.

The only way your going to know if you need to go further for sure is to see how it runs after replacing the tank and fuel filter. It may run fine. (cross your fingers) Probably ought to go ahead and drain your float bowl as well if they don't do it at the shop. Not too much trouble to do that.

On a final note, I seem to remember you saying that it was stored with a full tank of gas for a couple of years but even at that it sounds like more rust than anyone should expect unless you already had water in your fuel or your bike was exposed to some type of corrosive vapors where it was stored but that's just my opinion. I've never stored a bike for that long.

If the shop is doing the work, I would hope that it runs ok when they declare it fixed but on second thought, maybe not. I recently had a coil to go out and discovered that I too had some trash in the fuel filter and a little water as well. After replacing he coil, cleaning the tank and replacing the fuel filter, my bike has more power than I can remember but there are a few low speed glitches that weren't there before. I'm going to give it a little time to see if they work their way out and if not, I will looking at my carb as well. I noticed I had a few cracks in the boot.

Good luck with the warranty work, I hope it turns out right. You'll love riding it when it's fixed. Great looking bike, by the way.

Thanks for the input fellas.

The bike was stored for two years at the dealership, not by me. I'm not sure how they stored it. I am assuming pretty empty though. The carb is what I am worried about. I am having them do the work because it is a warranty issue, I just don't trust they would be as thourough as I would. Guess I will just have to hover over them

Their dealership? If so, That certainly helps your odds of getting it fixed correctly, as it's an embarrassment to them for improper storage procedures. Hope all goes well, keep us informed. BB

Yep, if I was you I would do the same thing. Get the helicopter warmed up and don't land it until it runs like it should. In my opinion most dealerships who have been in business a while usually have one or two people that are good at what they do. It's the price that turns me off. I let them replace my tires and I buy my oil from them but that's about it with an occasional exception. Heck, for what it cost to get the tires changed I feel like they should maybe clean the spokes up or something. They keep telling me theres a recall on my fourth gear (I think) and asking me to let them replace it. Their sales pitch is that I'll get my top end rebuilt for free in the process but I'm convinced that it would never run the same after that. Anyway, good luck!

Well, got my bike back friday. Just in time for the warmest weekend this year They replaced the tank, and said they went through the lines to the carb, changed the filters and cleaned the carb. Guess I will have to take their word for it. I know this, when I twist that throttle I better be holdin' on. There is a definite improvement! I can tell now that it was being choked off before. Only complaint I have is that the tank seems to be a different shade but maybe its just me. I'll get a good pic, maybe get some opinions.
