valve adjustment and a warranty question 4 Years, 1 Month ago
Hello my friends. I have a brand new Road Star that I'm currently breaking in. I'm at the 500 km (300 mile) mark here in beautiful Victoria BC. This bike is a twice left over, I suppose, as it is a 2006 model. I bought it over in Vancouver, which is a 1 1/2 hr ferry ride and a 1 1/2 hr drive from Victoria. I will get the initial 1,000 km check up done here in Victoria. We have 2 Yami dealers here. They tell me they don't do a valve adjustment on the initial check. Just fluid changes and inspections. Is that right? Should I insist on a valve adjustment? The main reason I bought this bike, and not another Road Star closer to home, is that it came with a 5 year, factory warranty (till 2013) Do mods such as pipes and AIS removal affect warranty? I asked the salesman but he didn't give me a definite answer. Thanks in advance for your help and input. You guys are great.

They don't adjust the valves at 1000 KM, they only check them. The initial check up is only and expensive oil change and bolt check. Yamaha recommends the valve adjustment at 16000 km.

If you start change parts and develop engine trouble I imagine the dealer will try and blame your mods. In some instances, for example a re-jet by you, he could be 'right'. To avoid trouble just save your OEM pipes and AIS and if you have to get warranty work done then switch them out.

Never thought of that! When I do the AIS removal (likely next fall) is the Baron's kit the one to go with? I will change pipes next fall too. Actually enjoying a quiet bike for a change. Previously had a Virago 1100 with Cobras. But on the other hand, now with no tach and the quiet pipes it's hard to tell the engine speed on the highway. Plus I want to be heard in order to be seen in order to be safe. Thanks for the advice.

Hey Woodster, nice to see another BC rider on here! I have to say I'm jealous about you being out in Victoria. I spent over 4 years there and just loved it! Wasn't riding yet at the time, but plan to take the ferry over this summer on a ride at least once.

As for your AIS removal, if you're concerned about warranty, you may want to try and just "disable" the system rather than totally remove it. I believe there are instructions somewhere on the Clinic on how to go about it. Basically, just removing the assembly up front and using something else to plug the holes. I'm in the process of trying to remove mine right now and can't imagine wanting to remove anything from these holes more than once! However, since you've got an '06, I think the process is easier than my '03!

Regardless, welcome to the Clinic and see you on the road sometime!

Mark

Go ahead and take it off, just don't trash it, then if something goes haywire , which it won't , take a few mins. and put it back on.. By the way, Markdyck, I truly like the name of your hometown ...

Nothing wrong with Chilliwack - great access to mountain roads and such. Had a great winter here, no snow and not much rain or wind, like last year. So I put insurance on my new Roadie March 1st this year and could have insured in Feb easily. I will get her broken in before I remove anything, but that AIS has got to go. butt ugly, is she. thanks for the advice (everyone)
enjoying my Road Star Smile!

Flashback - sorry for the unclear post. My comment about nothing being wrong with Chilliwack was intended for Markdyck's comment that he was jealous of my town, Victoria. Hope you didn't think I took your comment in a way you didn't intend.

You think "Chilliwack" has negative connotations... the last street I lived on was Woodcock. How's that for Mark Dyck living on Woodcock
