Better to ask a stupid question than not ask and remain stupid

MMO = Marvel Mystery Oil

Sorry for being cryptic.

Like my 6th grade teacher always said, "There are no stupid questions. Only stupid people asking them." But he wasn't a very good teacher

Yep, I was overchoking too which probably didn't help any. I think the manual says "7 seconds at full choke at temps above 50 deg centigrade" then 1/2 choke for a little while. I also found a place here in San Diego that will dyno it and dial it in with a jet kit too. I know its running way too rich, probably has been since it was new.Its weird that is doesnt happen all the time. I rode it home last night and it was fine, today coming to work it was back again. Definitely going to get a K&N too.

Not sure why I'm typing this cuz I don't know what it means, but since I put the K&N filter in my stock airbox and turned my PMS in 1/4 turn I only have to pull my choke out to the second notch to start it now when it's cold. No idea if that's bad or good. Bet this isn't any help to anyone either is it?

Urbanwarrior, run the ring-free or seafoam using a concentrated amount or what Yamaha calls a shock treatment then do what Doc says, Marvel Mystery Oil is great top end lube.

Big AL,

I am doing it now and getting a K&N. One of my local Yamaha dealers said they "Weren't aware of this issue." So I logged on to the internet in their shop and and showed them this link. Puzzled looks, hmmmmms, and no real answers is about all I got from them. Thank you all for the excellent info you have given me....what a great site!!!

Re:Engine backfiring/missing 5 Years, 10 Months ago
hey man: if you are running your oil level any higher than 1" on the dip stick than you most likely are having sticky valve sindrome according to the tech. from yamaha corp. i have ran the yamaha ring free @ 1.5 bottles or 18oz. to clear my valves up- upper end up. note thats a lot stronger than they rec. so do it @ your own risk! the bike is running great now and i have put around 70 miles on it with the extreem shock treatment in it. now as soon as the tank gets refilled im going to change my oil because before it was a light color and now it looks like crude oil strait from the ground! happy riding.

I am running right in the middle of the cross hatches right now, after bike is warmed up good, and waiting about 20 min to check. I will try lowering it more after I get some Ring Free in it. Thanks for the info!

Post edited by: Urbanwarrior, at: 2006/07/27 19:07
