When to go with synthetic 5 Years, 10 Months ago
OK, Opinion on when to go to synthetic oil vary. I've read some who did it at the 600 mile service. Others say to wait until at least 4000 miles. I think 600 is too soon but I don't think I need to wait until 4000 miles. I have 2000 on mine now and I'm going to go to syn as soon as I figure out which one I'm going to use. Let's not get into the which is best debate here. I'm just curious about what milage people have changed or will change to syn.

Thanks

At my 4000 mile service I went to Yamaha Blend 20W40R I`m going to full
synthetic this weekend.I`m at about 6500 miles, and noticed after this last trip
and the hot weather we have here my oil looks pretty dirty! I may go 4000
miles a change if I can make it though the winter,But think I`ll be changing
every 2500 during the summers from now on

Post edited by: vegasdave, at: 2006/07/27 07:30

I had about 1500 miles when I switched over.

About the same time that I had the collapsed lifter.

EEP! So, do you think there's a connection Doc? Or just bad timing.

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2006/07/27 07:59

I should clarify. The lifter collapsed before I swithed over. After pulling it apart to replace the lifters I chose to put synthetic in.

I waited to switch at 4000 miles based on everything I read. I went with Amsoil 20w50 full synthetic. The most comprehensive document I found on the web is "The motor oil bible". It's like a 177 pages of everything you ever wanted to know about oil and then some. You might want to check it out. You can just do a search on Google and you will find it.

From what I was told at the dealer, our bikes need the running time to properly seat the rings so I waited 4000 miles. Then went to red cap Mobil-1 15-50 syn. Doesn't use a drop between changes(every 4000 w/filter)and I am just at 20,000 miles.

Did the switch today. Went with RP 20/50. Did a 50 mile run afterwards. About what I got from going to synthetic on other bikes. Sounds smoother (real or imagined), shifts smoother for sure. A little cooler. I mainly wanted to protect the running parts better and I got that done.
