Hi pitched noise 5 Years, 10 Months ago
I have a new 2006 Road Star that I now have 1500 miles on. Since the break in is over I have reved it up a little more. When I get to a higher RPM I hear a hi-pitched noise. I have no idea where it is coming from. Any ideas?

I have the same thing (sort of).But I have it from mid RPMs. It's definetly tied into rpms. And I'm 99% sure it's from the motor. It gets a little lower pitched when I let off to shift and then goes right back up. I don't know if it's tied in to my changing my PMS setting but it seems to have started right after I turned my PMS in 1/4 turn. And I did it at right around the same miles you have. But I don't know if it's a bad thing. To me it sounds just like the whine you here when a V twin pulls up next to you. Harleys make that sound at all RPMs from what I've heard.

Does it sound like a sewing machine?

If so then it's just the gears.

The noise on mine I would describe as the tight powerful motor noise. You know, that noise. I had a 64 El Camino that had a good tight 327 that made the same high pitched whine. What has me curious is why it didn't show up until I turned the PMS in. I don't see the connection.

Air movement through the intake?

The air moving through my BAK makes different noises depending on the revs; it increases in pitch as I rev up.

Would a PMS change result in a different noise. Hared to say. But I know even after all these years I still hear an occasional 'new' noise that usually turns out to be an 'old' noise that I've tuned out.

I notice it when I hit 80mph in 5th gear. If I let off to 78 mph the noise stops. If I ride even harder that 80 it is still there. It sounds like it comes from under the gas tank or up front somewhere. Kind of an irritating noise like a high pitch of air whistling thru a small hole. I have Vance and Hines Power Shot exhaust with Dynojet needles and jets in the carb. It was all set up like that when I bought the bike new from the dealer. At first I was getting around 30 mpg. I called Dyno and they said to move the needle from the 4th groove from the top to the third groove from the top. It improved to 48 mpg last Sunday. Before it was so rich it would blow black smoke when starting it. It sounds better now. I wish I could get rid of the darn buzz.

Do you have a windshield on the bike? Sometimes you can get a whistle coming in between the headlight and the headlight cut out in the windshield.

Coolage,

Don't hear much of it any more but it could be your headlight. When you hear the buzz place your hand on the top of the headlight. If it goes away we can provide a fix.

I do have a Silverado windshield. I have tried pulling and pushing different directions while driving to find the noise. No Luck. I will try the headlight thing.

If the headlight doesn't work out you could try taking your windshield off and going for a ride.
