Poor gas mileage 4 Years, 1 Month ago
Hey Fellas,

My bike has been running a little rich I believe from factory. My gas mileage stays around 34-35 mpg. After I shut the bike off in the garage the whole garage smells of gas. Can I just turn my pms in 1/2 a turn? It should be 3 1/2 turns out correct? I have never torn into my carb. So its all stock except for the exhaust. Also, how do I check my float level? Thanks for any help,
JM

They are Vance and Hines short shots. I never have gotten gas mileage above 35mpg.

Most people are, I believe in the 2½ out on the PMS. As for the float level... I'm sure one of the GREAT "teachers" on this site will be able to answer all of your questions. Good luck, and nice bike.

The float level process is detailed in the manual.

Turn the PMS in 1/2 turn at a time until you get popping on decel, then turn it out 1/4 turn.

Are you sure someone did not rejet when the pipes were put on?

I set mine this way - Dry

You can see how to check it on the bike in the tech articles in the carb section.

No, I bought it new in Mar.'05. Put the pipes on about a year later.

Stock carb ... check your float level.

For a stock carb you should be getting better mileage.

seen the topic and just had to add my 2cent!

after laying my bike down and gettin back i noticed my gas mileage was horrible!! i was gettin around 40 before the wreck, but noticed i was fillin up after only 100 miles! i let it run out monday on ride home from work...it run out at 97 miles!!!!

best advice i got was that the air filter on the BAK was soaked in oil, and sure enough it was black and smutty. i took it off and cleaned it real well and re-oiled it. gonna ride it this afternoon and make sure it runs fine. gonna be ridin 200+ miles tomorrow so i'll see then if it helped!

So I have never pulled the carb off. I have taken the tank off and that is as far as I have gone. Is pulling the carb a pain or very time consuming? I would like to pull it off check the float level and if thats good adjust my pms a little. Now, once I drill out my brass plug I can adjust the pms on the bike correct?
Thanks fellas,
