Fuel gage indicator 4 Years, 11 Months ago
Hi Road Star lovers, wonder if one of you have had this problem before?

My fuel gage indicator is miss-reading the fuel quantity, i.e. when the needle shows about 1/8 above the empty mark, I still have about 10 liters in my thank. Knowing the tank quantity can hold 20 liters , the needle should read about the half of the gage.
Question?

Is there any ajustement screw or do I have to live with?

Road Star 1999 model

Thank you

This is a common issue on all road stars. The fuel gauge is not very linear. I think yamaha took there standard from the aircraft industry. It is only required to be correct at the E mark.

Assuming nothing is physically broken, this happens once in a while.

It seems that most times if you disconnect the battery overnight the problems mysteriously goes away.

Reading Bama's response I should have asked .... when you fill the tank does it eventually read full?

Yes when the tank is full, the gage read full.

Then ignore what I said; it only works if the fuel gauge starts acting strange.

Not even then...

Last Sunday, my gas gauge literally went from 1/8 tank to E before my eyes - I rode another 5 miles before the Low Fuel light even came on!

RoadieSL,

I don't know if the battery being out can cause problems with the fuel sender unit, but I will tell you this. My fuel gauge worked well UNTIL the battery died on me one morning and I had to jump start the bike from a car to get home. I've since replaced the battery. However, ever since my low fuel light has been blinking 8 times and the needle never moves.

I've tried all the suggested fixes short of replacing the unit, so I guess that's next. BTW my bike is an '04 with less than 5000 miles on it, so go figure!??
