not another Oil question .... 4 Years ago
Sorry in advance for yet another one ...

As I have been reading the oil threads, I think I understand that what brand of oil you use is pretty much personal preference except that you MUST avoid any oil with "energy conserving" in the grade circle. Am I reading that right?

The reason I ask is that I am considering putting Castrol 20W50 in my bike this spring because it does not have "energy conserving" in the grade circle, and I have had such wonderful luck running Castrol in my 4 wheeled vehicles for many years.

your luck will continue as long as you run a stock cam. 20w 50 in a star is a good idea. Your choice is solid, and Lucis oils are great if you want to step up.

Hey!
Just changed over to Mobil 1 V twin 20-50, and the bike really seems to take kindly to it! Quited the motor noise down for sure!!! Just my 2 cents...

I have no idea what the prior owner ran in my bike, but I'm changing the oil tomorrow and putting Mobil 1 Synthetic 20W50 V-Twin oil in. Seems to me that this is the right stuff.

On Castrol oil - I run it in my truck and both cars. Have from day one. It's a great product.

I've run a couple of tanks of gas through with Lucas additive in it and it's done wonders for the engine noise. I highly recommend it.

I run the Castrol 20w50 (car-oil) with no problems. Right now im in the middle of an experiment. 1/2 dino and 1/2 synt. It is running good. Yes they do sell a synt. blend but buy buying 2qts of each and throwing them in there you save a couple of bucks. I also ran the Mobile 1 15w50 car oil for 12,000 miles. Hey it said it is guaranteed for 15,000 miles. Take Care and ride safe Bro. OSO

Re:not another Oil question .... 4 Years ago
Thanks to everybody for your input. I was a little concerned about using an oil that didn't say "motorcycle" on it, but I know that Castrol is good stuff. I think the 20W50 is going to work for me. (I have heard good things about Lucas also, but nobody around here sells it.)

Another question ... I have a 2004 bike, but so far it has not developed any signs of SVS. Its still running evenly, and not making any obnoxious noises. Would I benefit from running a can of ring free through it just for preventative measure, or would that just be wasting money?

Don't get overly concerned with SVS. It's not as common as it seems. It wouldn't hurt to run a couple ounces in the tank every now and then but I think it's more important to run regular gas and not baby the bike. Run it out through each gear and hit the limiter at least once every ride. Don't lug the motor.
