aww, rats! 5 Years, 9 Months ago
hiya guys, back again!
been away due to business closely followed by exploding computer syndrome. back regually again soon.

in the mean time, my 2000 roadie has developed it´s first fault on the way home tonight. for the last month the fuel guage has been a bit iffy, but i know when she needs topping up so it wasn´t a problem. tonight i lock the shop, start her up, and she mises a couple of beats on one pot. `hmmm, bit odd´ i thought, and started off on the way home. noticed a bit of a miss that gradually got worse to the point of losing anything above 2000rpm with the tacho going loopy at that point, and nothing below 1000rpm. i pulled over into a parking space and whipped the tank off and checked all connections, and all where secure and clean. put it back together again and she still was not playing the game.

so sunday i´ve got to go to the shop, grab the manual and multimeter, and spend sunday buggering around with the esoteric art that is electrical fault tracing.

gotta admit that i´m kinda hoping that the ignition box is crapping out, cos then i can grab a dyna 3000 out of the housekeepy cash without the missus complaining too much. `honest my love, it IS cheaper than the O.E.M. ignition unit´

right, this bit is being added on later due to the battery on the laptop crapping out before i could submit (it´s one of them weeks.....)

i´ve run tests with the multi meter on the pickup coil, coils, and relay, and it would seem all is o.k, so it seems to point to the ignition box

anyone had similar symptoms and found a solution?

Did you check your plugs? Fuel pump going out maybe?

The ingnitor going is not a common occurance.

Have you ruled out carbon deposits, especially if it's missing in the rear cylinder.

I'd try cleaning it out before I spent the big bucks on another ignitor. Or better yet 'borrow' a friends for a test.

erizo,

You might want to check your spark and try to rule out any problem with the plug wires and plug boots. Some of the guys were having problems with them.

Doc's suggestion is a good one. You could try some Ring Free and see if that sorts things out. Lot easier than pulling the heads to check for carbon deposits.

I'm sure with your skill and experience you won't be having this problem long! I'm starting to see the beginnings of another helpful post from you to help some of us less mechanically inclined in the future!

Good luck.

oh yeah! the rapid response team strike again. well done guys

plug leads are ok, plug caps are o.k, fuel is o.k, primary and secondary resistance on the coils is o.k.

the thing that has thrown me was the tacho above 2000 revs waving about like a schoolteachers finger when the misfire starts (like waving betwen 2000-8000rpm with no engine rev increase) . i have disconnected the tacho to see if that was causing the fault, but the symptoms remain the same.

it doesn´t come across as a carbon issue. this ones electrical (wheres the crying smiley?)

Do you think your coils could be shorting to the frame on the high side? That would cause your tach to flop around a bit! Don't have much more to offer...

Let us know when you find out what the problem was!

Hey, I can add to this one; what air cleaner are you running? If stock, the small vacuum line in the back of the air cleaner going to the side of the carb will cause your bike to run like CRAP if it is not hooked up on both ends . Trust me, mine has come off twice. Can't explain how/why, but it will give you an underpowered dog of a bike that will billow black smoke. Good luck! - Rod.
