I have been a Star member for 4 years and I am a past officer. Star is a for profit organization and pockets a ton of money from it's members. There are free riding groups like the ISRA that offer everything Star offers without making someone rich. Any organization that calls the PGR, AMA, ABATE or the MMA an MC is not one that you would want to ride with, this why I left.
Huh I don't/havn't seen that side of Star... been a member for 2 years and belong to Chapter #237 San Fernando Valley. we have a GREAT bunch of people in our chapter great rides, events etc. It's nice when we all pull together to help each other. About 6months ago our past president had a house fire and lost everything the night before our monthly chapter ride so we all went over to help him out. Then a couple of weeks later he needed help sifting through his house before the demo for rebuilt and about 20 of us came over to to help him out. THAT is the type of group I want to ride with.
The Star-B-Que we recently had in San Diego was really first class they even got Yamaha to come out with the demo rides. It was really nice to meet a ton of fellow Star riders and see a bunch of Roadstars.
For my $48 a year I get free shipping from Barons and special discounts during the year. I have saved enenough from that alone to pay for 3 years membership!!
IMHO

Just to share a few facts about Star Touring and the Star Family Foundation. In the Star Charters it is stated the a member of Star Touring my not wear any type of support patch for any other MC. This is understandable, but Star is calling the PGR an MC this is very wrong. Now as for public information on the Star Family Found Foundation Star collected $15,000.00 spent $900.00 for supplies and helped 3 Star families giving out $3,700.00 and Star kept the other $10,000.00 this info can be found at the Arizona Corporation Commission web site tax filing. As for Alan Cease and Star Touring they makes about 2.5 mil from your $48.00 $160k from patch and sales from there store, and they keep 75 cents from every dollar donate to there charities as a for profit organazition. Why pay to ride your bike there are a lot of great people out there where you can belong to a group and ride free.
I am not bashing Star, there are a lot of great people in Star and the chapters are non profit and support good charities just know the facts and know where your money is going.

I'm a Lone Star myself and only belong to the PGR (But can't ride with them until I have a 3X5 Flag on a 6' pole on my bike???).
I did however meet a guy at the Javits Convention Center a few weeks ago. He stepped into the booth and laid down his helmet and laptop case. I asked what he rode and he looked me dead in the eye and loudly exclaimed," A Yamaha Road Star 1700!" I laughed and told him that I never heard anyone so enthusiastic about it and told him I had a 1600. At that point he told me he was the President of the Long Island Star Club. A real nice guy. Not too pushy. So, if anyone here wants to look into the LI chapter, contact Frank @ www.listar278.org.

Another thing about star is alcohol is not allowed on rides. Not that I like to get drunk on rides, but every now and then I do like to have a beer with my burger. They wont even allow that. I have a tough time with someone telling me they wont allow me to do something that is legal.

Hello All. I've been a member of STAR Chapter 221 of Houston for 2 years, and am currently the chapter Secretary. I can't speak for other areas too much, but our chapter is great! These people have become my wife and mine's best friends, and I have no doubt that the people we ride with from 221 would do ANYTHING for us and the same is true for them. We have a couple of group rides each month and usually have 15-20 bikes for these 150-200 mile rides. Monthly Chapter meetings usually have 60-80 in attendance. For STAR Days last year in Chattanooga, TN (2400 miles in 9 days) we had 24 bikes make the trip. This year for Arkansas, we have about 35 bikes signed up.
We are also a big supporter of a local shelter for battered women and children. We provide food, clothes, and lots of volunteer hours, as well as money to support this shelter. At a national level STAR is a major sponser of Feed the Children, constantly raising money to purchase and store food, and make delivery drops. Until you've participated in unloading a semi or two full of food and filling cars of needy families, don't criticize the group too much.
There are some problems with STAR and our chapter has had issues with the national level in the past. However, all organizations the size of Star Touring and Riding have problems. While it is true we are regularly sent memos that we read at the meetings "reminding" our members that PGR patches are not to be placed on vest with STAR patches, most in our chapter have the sentiment that until STAR beging paying for our vests and the cost to sew on patches, we'll continue putting whatever we want on our vests. I proudly wear the PGR of Texas patch on my vest, as well as most of the other officers in our chapter, and more than half the members. We have even ridden to several PGR missions as a group and worn our STAR vests.
Star Touring and Riding Chapter 221 has become a second family for me,and I wouldn't trade my friendship with them for anything. I'm not saying that STAR is our friendship, but if not for the organization I wouldn't have ever met my best friends. If STAR fell apart tomorrow (or more likely disbanded 221), I'd still ride with the same group of people.
So, I'd check out the local chapter and see what they're like before you make up your mind either way. I believe it's the local chapter that can make or break your STAR experience, rather than the national organization. In our chapter you don't have to be a member to visit meetings, and can make 2 rides before you get voted into the chapter and must join STAR at the national level (thus requiring the $48 fee). Don't let the fee deter you from visiting your local chapter to see what they're like, because that is probably a non-issue.

whoa!!!....shut the door! I'd have to pass on Star as well. I'm not into getting loaded (during a ride anyways...), but I'm all about being laid back, enjoying the ride and the LAST thing I would need is a nanny over my shoulder telling me what I can eat/drink for lunch.
