just an update guys: i know it dont make sence but the bike is still running good after i put the ais back on. i was wandering though, how do you think the bike would run if the ais plugs were drawling in air around the metal gaskets? maybe that was my problem all along?

Sure sounds like you didnt cap off the vacuum port when the AIS was removed!! The
plates leaking would mean the fresh air would get into the exhaust ports espeially on decel and you would get popping and backfiring on decel. Still has no effect on fuel/air mixture... but if you left off the vacuum cap it would act as you say .....and lean out the mixture. Removed my AIS and no effect on performance whatsover.... but I made sure the cap was on all the way on the nipple and so it would not leak.

Post edited by: Pop Rivet, at: 2006/08/21 06:40

Two for an air leak.

The AIS does nothing in the way of improving or degrading performance. If it now runs better with it on then you had a leak. As Pop Rivet suggested it indicates a leak at the manifold where the AIS hose attaches.

Amen to the air leak at the manifold. That will sure cause goofy running problems.

guys thanks for all the write backs:

i did have the manifold line caped off and banded with a radiator clamp. i checked for a cut or crack, but found nothing. but on the bottom of the ais on the right side of the starter the open line that hangs down off of the ais canister. if i cap off the line with my finger that the bike runs even better.

any more on this subject is welcome tnx.

Post edited by: dozer, at: 2006/08/21 22:14

The short about 5/8 " id inlet hose that goes to the AIS filter if you put your finger over it when the bike is running you have disabled the AIS..it is no longer sucking AIR this would be akin to removing the AIS and plugging the ports.
I dont understand capping off a line... You usually plug a line Did you remove the gas tank and put a vacuum cap on the nipple on the manifold or did you plug the 3/16 id hose to the intake manifold .

Post edited by: Pop Rivet, at: 2006/08/21 23:30

hows it going: the first time i took the ais off, i didn't take of the tank off. i just cut the hose off @ the back of the fuel pump area with extra slack and pluged the hose with the shoulder of a bolt that i cut off and ground the edges off of then i put a radiator clamp around it. then zip tied the hose to the back of the fuel pump.

i have had bad luck with rubber plugs in the past, after about a year or so they dry rot and leak.

Post edited by: dozer, at: 2006/08/22 19:22

A vacuum cap is made of the same rubber(epdm) as a vacuum hose and should last the same (from my experience) That being said...im puzzled at your symptoms..
