Check tire pressure too. Low tire pressure as well as being bad for your tires and affecting handling, will adversely affect your mileage. As long as I don't ride like a bat out of hell (speeds under 80mph) I get between 38-45 mpg, but usually average 42-43. Before I put pipes and a new air box and rejetted my bike (which was when I had about 3K miles) I averaged about 35mpg.
