Mileage 5 Years, 9 Months ago
I am looking for suggestions to increase my gas mileage. I do understand that driving style does impact mileage, and I would be content with 45-47 mpg.

Current setup is 06 R*, Baron Jet Kit - 170 main, 4th clip, PMS 2.5 turns, BAK,
HK Big 3" Straights. 42 mpg-city/hwy on average over 5 tanks of gas.
I try to keep it under 75 mph on the highway, but I can't always keep myself from hammering it off the line from time to time.

Should I be looking at leaning out the needle, or the main?

Thanks

If you can hammer on it now and then and get that milage It doesn't seem too bad to me. Blipping at lights can eat up gas. Don't use the choke any more than you have too. I suppose you could lean it out more with jetting but if your bike is running the way you like and not giving you any grief then I would leave it alone. But when can we ever leave well enough alone?

Going from 42 to 45 mpg will give you another 15 miles / tank. If your bike is running good it's not worth worrying about IMO. You might open up the jetting can of worms

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2006/08/24 10:14

Topher,

I have a similar setup as yours. I'm running the V & H Powershots on a 2005 Silverado with the BAK filter and jets. Also, have the Baron's ported manifold and AIS removed. I generally get around 50 mpg (with stock speedometer and no adjustments). My jetting is a little leaner than yours, at least on the lower end. Main jet is 172, 3.5 on the clip and around 2 on the PMS. I started at 4 on the clip and the bike ran well but my plugs looked like I was running a little rich. Went to 3 on the clip and bike would just not run well at all. Added a .020 washer to lift the needle half a step and that seems to be a sweet spot, at least for my bike. Oh, I also cranked the accelerator pump duration adjustment down to about 1 turn out.

On one trip I actually averaged 58 mpg. That was over a couple hundred miles where because of road conditions never was able to get much faster than about 60 to 65. Generally, I'm averaging around 50.

42 is good, especailly if you hammer it "time to time".

First change out the main to 167.5 (Mikuni). Try the WOT and if it runs OK then move the needle to the 3rd clip with another washer.

Hey Vegas

Get the boat ready. I'll be there tomorrow! Or we could wait. I'm going to be jetting this weekend (I hope) so I'm pretty sure there is going to be a larger can of MUCH bigger worms available in the very near future .
