Thanks for the response fellas. I think I will go with something similar to what you have Ted. Does fastening it to the backrest make it uncomfortable for the passenger at all or any other ill effects such as scratching the metal or creasing the backrest pad?

Doesn't seem to bother my wife  IIRC the backrest pad had a temporary crease, no biggie.
Like I said the hard part for me was mounting the darn thing so it didn't slide around...follow the suggestion and it will work great

My friend uses T-bags. He and his wife travel all over the country. No problems. Never lost a bag and they seem to have all that they need. I will say his wife is a whiz at packing a bike. They also have saddlebags that they use for the everyday junk, 4 packs of smokes, rain gear, change of gloves, extra shirt... you know.
I have bags and I pull a trailer.

Another useful tip passed on to me is to pack clothes in the 2.5-gallon ZipLoc bags. You can squeeze out the extra air and compress the clothes to take up less space - plus, everything stays bone dry in case of a torrential downpour and leaky luggage.

I ended up going with saddle bags - but I put them on quick release brakets (Ghost Brackets, E-Z Brackets). Bar hoppen, no bags. Heading out for a few days, slide the bags on and take off. You can even take the bags off once you get there and carry 'em in like luggage.
