My 10 year old son and I have decided to do an IRON BUTT run to raise money for the UCSF Medical deparment that took care of a close family relative for several years for free that just recently died of Corticobasal Degeneration. If anyone is interested in pledging, please go to http://www.crenshawfamily.com/carolemurphymemorialride.htm for more information and please feel free to pass this link along.

Re:Carole Murphy Memorial Ride 7 Years, 7 Months ago
Thanks a lot Gram, appreciate it. Here is some more particular information for biker types that it may actually mean something too. Non-bikers don’t get it … why they are Non-bikers I guess.

Date: November 6th to 7th
Route/Time:
Depart - Antioch CA – 4 AM November 6th
HWY 160 to HWY 12 to HWY 160
Turn around point (approximately 500 Miles) – Eugene Oregon
Same Route south.

At HWY 12 is the “decision point”. At this point we decide if we throw in the towel at 1000 miles in 24 hours, or do we fell like we can do more and push south for the 1500 miles in 36 hours. My 10 year old co-pilot has done 450 miles in a day so far … so this is a push for him (BTW, this whole thing was his idea and he is telling people we are doing 1500 miles – dad is the one with the safety valve)

If when we push south:
Turn around point: Wheel Ridge, CA

We will probably drive Saturday until about 10 PM or until we are tired. We will stay in a motel for a 6 or 7 hour nap, get up and finish from where ever we are. Since the route has been plotted at 60 MPH, and we all know HWY 5 will flow at 75 to 80, I expect we will make decent time and get well over 1000 miles before we stop for the evening. I do not even expect to attempt 1500 miles in 24 hours and have made the “I can do anything I am 10 hear me roar” child know that.

Guidelines for IRON BUTT (http://www.ironbutt.com) will be followed and this route and plan has already been approved.

Now, HWY 5 is NOT the most scenic route (much prettier north than south tho), but we want to make the run with a margin of error. Since Erik has only done 450 miles on twisties, I want to make sure he has a good chance to hold up and just crusin’ up the highway gives him a better shot at it. It will give me a better shot at it as well. We will do more scenic routes the next ride.

Note: At 10 years old he has already decided that I am buying a new bike in 6 years because for his 16th birthday he wants my Road Star because he thinks it is the coolest bike he has ever seen. What, I have to upgrade to a new Road Star in 6 years … sorry dear, your son told me I had too.

If anyone would like to join us on the ride, let me know. If you would like to pledge, please go to http://www.crenshawfamily.com/carolemurphymemorialride.htm.

Thanks

Have the package ready to mail ... my 10 year old and I finished our Antioch, CA to Eugene, OR back to Antioch, CA trip this morning at 4:04 AM (we left yesterday at 4:06 - thanks to some horrendous fog, we got pretty waylaid both leaving and coming) First gas 2 miles from home to last gas - same station - shows us with 19 minutes to spare. The plan was to do the SS1K and if we could manage, the BB1500 at the same time. Discretion is the better part of valor and we decided that 1000 was quite enough for his first attempt.
Biggest thing I learned is that no matter how much physical and mental prep you try and give a 10 year old for something like this, they just do not have a CLUE until they are into it. He never griped, complained or whined tho. Was a tough little man. He has already been talking about how we should change some of our tactics for the BB1500 we will do WHEN IT IS WARM (his emphasis, not mine ;-D ) We did make longer stops, a 4 hour nap stop, and those coupled with weather (and the fact that my bike seems to lose at least 8 MPG going 85 vs 75 causing a few extra stops) we barely made it ... but make it we did. According to Streets and Trips we did 1087.6 miles using the exact route we drove.

All we have to do now is send in all the goodies and wait to see what happens.

Oh, we also managed to raise almost $1100 for UCSF with pledges by the mile. People thought I was crazy enough to do it, but with my son on back they said there was no way we would make it. Never tell my boy he can't do something ;-D.

We both plan to do a little write up on the journey, will let you know when it is up. You can read my wife's journal from our phone check ins at
