What do you use to secure your bike? I'm trying to find the best "Security Means" for my bike. A buddy suggested a disc lock for the front wheel.

I've invested a good penny in modifying my bike. Friday, I picked my bike up from the shop--a friend was following behind me. On the way home, I pulled into Walmart. I'm not to crazy about Walmart because of the elements that frequents the store. My friend, she sat in her car and was parked near my bike. I'm in there for no more than 10 minutes when my cell phone goes off. She's yelling for me to get out to the parking lot because a few Mexican guys are messing with my bike. I came out running. I confronted them and reached into my back pocket as if I was going to pull out (of course I had nothing on me but they didn't know that). They got into their Civic and pealed off.

This story is not about race--it doesn't matter that they're Mexican--I was just giving the details. According to my friend, soon as I left, they drove by my bike and then came back around again. One guy got out and was walking around the bike. Then tried to wiggle the steering column. Obviously, it was to the left and was locked. (Her car has tinted windows and you can't see in them or they were to dumb to look.) The other guy got out the car and walked over. She said they were standing over the bike--that's when she called me.

I ask about security for your bikes, primarily to the guys that have customized their rides. Also, to warn, Spring and Summer brings out thieves--they look for a quick way to make a buck. Please be aware and take precaution.

You got lucky. Some don't. To a talented thief a vehicle is just seconds away from becoming theirs. To a not so talented moron it's a process. Even something as simple as locking the forks will deter the average dirtbag(s). For extra peace of mind and simplicity a disc lock on either brake rotor will put a dent in their day quickly. They're hidden and real hard to dissuade. I've yet to hear about any one who can bench press these bikes into a truck or trailer if their immovable. The best thing though is an eager witness with a full description of the thieves and their vehicle license tag number/direction of travel either. I have a feeling this posting will create some very inventive (and cheap) ways to protect our investments.

I've been considering a bike alarm as well as locking the forks. I figure it would be one more added peace of mind. Does anyone know if these alarms are worth it?

Re:Security System 4 Years ago
i fitted an alarm with motion sensor and immobilisation.

it was mainly for spanish drivers who park by reversing until they hit something, then pull forwards. with the sensor at least there is an audible warning siren which tells them `oi, gilipollas, stop reversing´.

on the subject of disc locks and other security stuff, DO NOT BUY ROUND KEY LOCKS! they are pathetic and can be opened in seconds.

a mate went public with this info, and cost oxford locks a packet.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zy8sEj8etU

and also showed how valueless are the security guarantee certifications given to various firms.

be aware!

It's just horrible that you can't enjoy hobbies without leaches coming out and trying to rob you blind. 85% of folks work hard and are law abiding--15% of the masses are living off (in one way or the other) of the 85%.

The next time, they'll have a .357 slug in their shoulder blade.

Save yourself the lawsuit and the trip to jail. Just carry a set of handcuffs or a strong zip-tie and when you confront the low-life gutter trash, order him to the ground at gunpoint (in your best cop imitation) and then cuff him and wait for the law.

I think the "punishment" he'll get from Bruno in the joint will more than satisfy your urge to get your pound of flesh for the offense.

I have a disc lock that I use on the front. It's very heavy and chrome. The bonus of this one is that it also has an alarm in it that will wake the dead!!

which brand do you have? Is it reliable where a strong wind won't make it go off or if I have it in my office garage, will the rumble of someone's exhaust trip it?

Thanks!

The only problem w/ cuffing them or zip tying them is nowadays they'll sue you for false imprisonment. And the way today is, They would win.

Folks can and do sue for anything and everything. Doubtful they'd win considering they were trying to steal your property. But hey, who knows with the idiots they put on juries these days. Still, I'll take my chances with being sued for false imprisonment over shooting someone over property.

I personally believe that shooting someone who is in the act of robbing you of your assets should not only be legal, but applauded! However, some touchy-feely types out there take a dim view of killing someone over "things". "Things can be replaced" they say, "but people can't". Well IMHO some folks shouldn't be replaced!
